Originally started as a mailing-list for drum&bass deejays and producers, Dutch Breakz soon transformed into a gathering place for producers, deejays, journalists, party organizers and fans active in the Dutch breakbeat scene. Although some major Dutch players aren't involved Dutch Breakz is representing the breakbeat scene in The Netherlands. A scene that is highly ignored by the Dutch media. Undeservedly so. The first volume of the Dutch Breakz compilation proved, although not always convincingly, that there are enough
talented Dutch producers.
Volume 2 is less diverse but more consistent. 2 Wikked for instance do what they are good at: uptempo drum&bass with a deep probing bassline and scratches to ad some hiphop flavour. A nice contrast with the ice-cold electro by F:un[x]iun, who could have lived in Detroit. Nearly as cold is the downtempo breakbeat Zaphod is serving. Chilling. More uptempo is nOjZz' drum&bass. His track is like a constant fight between melody and roughness. A fight that keeps you alert.
Best contributions are from DJ Jape du Marie and Senz. The first brings atmospheric breakbeat with progressive elements and nice vocals by his sister Annette that gives the track a Hybrid/Florida feel. Senz also brings some trancy breakbeat but sounds more manic, like the early Eat Static. Very very nice.
Xaf also experiments with breakbeat. His mixture of breakbeat and drum&bass has a lot of speed-changes and progressive elements.
But the best track on the album comes from Davek and Maartje T. Davek uses live percussion, dubby basslines and a reggae feel. Maartje's Dutch vocals are layered on top of it. A unique combination that makes this track the best
'Nederpop' track in ages.
But not every thing on Dutch Breakz Volume 2 is silver or gold. Jinyoki's drum&bass lacks tension and Mikenzo's mixture of heavy metal and big beat with grunting singer is totally redundant. But two out of ten still is nice. Isn't it?
