Are you satisfied with the overall sound of the new Cords-album 'Lunchbox'?
"Yeah, I am. This is the album which we always wanted to make and it sounds exactly what we had in mind. It is our best record ever. The nice sound has everything to do with having Steve Albini as producer. After we send a demo-tape to him (yes, that still does work!) and we surprisingly were invited to come to Chicago last summer, we all had to get familiar with eachother and had to explore the possibilities. Somehow Albini liked our sound and it worked out nicely. Working with him was very inspiring for us since he is a specialist and exactly knows when the sound optimized."
How do new songs arise within The Cords?
"We used to come together and jam for hours, which than resulted in a couple of minutes of material. Nowadays we all work alone at home and send tapes around. This works much more efficient."
What would you like to do with The Cords which you haven't done yet?
"Mhmm, hard one...we have already done so much...more than a regular dutch band has ever done. But almost nobody noticed it, we are more like a silent band that comes and leaves through the backdoor. I mean, we've been several times to the US, European tours, Australia and ofcourse Roskilde.
But working with Steve Albini was probably our number one dream to accomplish. And we've done that, so I am pretty satisfied."
Can you live from making music?
"Yes, we can manage, sometimes we do a parttime job, but nothing regular."
So, what's the deal with 'telefunk'?
"That's the other project I am involved in. It is based on a acoustic sound and samples. With The Cords we just GO!, we rock, telefunk on the other hand is the experiment. We are currently recording at home with an 8-tracker and based upon that we will hopefully release an album after the summer on De Konkurrent. BTW: the gigs last January were not completely what you can expect, especially friday was pretty bad."
What's been spinning your cd-player lately?
"PJ Harvey, Lauren Hill, Calexico, the new one from Built To Spill and some Jazz, Reggae and Buddy Holiday. I am not really focusing on (noise)pop all day you know."
What's you're opinion about the Internet?
"I don't surf a lot, basically because I don't have a computer yet (but I am in the process of buying one, so if someone has a machine for me, let me know!). I think Internet will be very important for the distribution of music in the future and am planning to do something on the net for 'Telefunk'."
If we were standing in Get Records 2 streets from here and I would give you f100,-, which record(s) would you buy directly?
"That would be DJ Krush and the latest one from Blonde Redhead, cause I only have that one on tape."
How about Dutch radio?
"In general: boring...I visit the US quite often and then you hear the difference: you can just tape 2 hours and you'll have an excellent tape. Cann't imagine that here. They should have to change Radio3FM to BBC model: we need a John Peel over here. I mean, why not a PJ song during the day?"
If you had to move, where would it be?
"San Francisco: nice city, nice people....ohhhh no, wait: Melbourne, that's the one. That's were I want to live. There is this quarter there where only musicians live...that's where I want to be."
