On 'Happy Traum' you can definitely hear some Byrds influences. What did you learn from your Marlboro flashback tour?
"We were listening to the Byrds long before the Flashback-concept was invented. They are our all-time heroes. Certainly we learned something form the Byrds: the whole psychedelic-folk-pop thing including the vocal-harmonies and guitar-arrangements. The Marlboro-tour was like re-living (and exploiting!) an old love and it certainly wasn't our first acquaintance with the Byrds."
In almost every review 'Happy Traum' is called a nice pop record and you are compared to 'ideal sons-in-law'. I hardly read any sharp positive or negative reviews on Happy traum and the band. What do you think about this and can you explain it?
"I haven't read any negative reviews so far. But quiet a few raving reviews. I'm pleasantly surprised by all the warm reception this record has received. We've always been into this sensitive and fragile, sweetsongwriting (we can be pretty loud and rough when we play live, though) I guess it's partly a reflection of who we are. This 'ideal-sons-in-law' image is a form of typecasting from which it seems hard to escape. I certainly wouldn't recommend myself as a son-in-law. But why bother?"
At the concerts after the release of Weeps you hardly ever played
songs of Renko or the EP's, but at 'het oude pothuys' and at the
Lowlands festival you played 'I could never love you'. Are you
planning to play more songs like this one on the coming tour?
"Recently we've been rediscovering some old songs, like Mirrormind, Shamrock, ICNLY, Into the Open (!). During live-shows we want to be able to pick from a broad selection of songs. And it's great fun doing them."
When Weeps was released you already did play various shows.
With Happy traum you waited until the release (except for the 2 try
outs). Why did you do it that way?
"As you may have heard, Jeroen Kleijn and Jeroen Vos did not participate in the making of HT. It wasn't until the release of HT that DA - as a five piece band - started rehearsing the songs from HT. So we have a lot of catching up to do. Weeps was a totally different process. The five of us worked hard on the songs for more than a year and did a number of live-shows as well, before entering the studio and record DA Weeps."
Are there plans to release Happy traum in other countries? Which?
"There's a lot of 'networking' in progress, I can tell you. No definite plans, yet. The USA would suit us perfectly I think. And Japan, of course."
Which song is going to be the 2nd single? How many singles can we
expect from 'Happy Traum'?
"We haven't made up our minds yet about what to release as a follow-up for 'Surely Justice'. The second single is about as far as we care to look now."
For Weeps you had a drum 'n' bass remix made, are you planning to do something with this remix?
"I liked it myself and I think a release as a single was briefly considered."
Do you like festivals?
"Well, there are festivals and festivals. Some are well organized, with fine catering, fresh towels and good sound-equipment. With others it's like tossing a coin; you're either lucky or not. In Slagharen - some where around 1996 - we were not lucky. Rain turned the sand and the grass into mud and the drunk audience started throwing it at us."
What do your parents think of Daryll-ann?
"They think it was about time I grew up."
Is there one musician in particular with whom you want to record in the future?
"I'd love to work with Björk. And that's only for the near future. I recently saw her live at 'Later with Jools' and it brought tears to my eyes. I just hope she digs me."
Which music are you listening to lately?
"Loudon Wainwright III, Bauer, Dusty Springfield, Pavement, Meindert Talma & the Negroes, Rod Stewart."
What do you want to achieve with the band?
"Continuous improvement."
