Read on to see what DAVID OLNEY had to say in our BLUE HIGHWAYS questionnaire...
How the devil are you?
"Fine. Thanks for asking."
What was the first gig you ever went to?
"If you mean the first concert I went to, my brother took me to see Ray Charles in 1962. It was
life-changing. My first gig of my own was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in 1969 at a club called
the Cat's Cradle. Also life-changing."
What were you like at school?
"I was a smart kid until high school. Then I was a dumb-ass."
If you weren't a music star what would you be?
"Someone who wanted to be a music star."
What is your most treasured material possession?
"My guitar."
What's the worst record you've ever made?
"Oddly enough, I've never made a bad record."
When did you last cry and why?
"Last week. I was slicing an onion."
What's your poison?
"Jack Daniel's."
Pick five words to describe yourself.
"Five words is too limiting. An anagram of David Olney is: oddly naive. Also, day love din. Or,
avidly done."
What's in your pockets right now?
"Nothing. I don't have my pants on."
Who was the last person you punched?
"German fellow. Didn't catch his name."
What was the last record you bought?
"Bix Beiderbecke Anthology."
What are you most likely to complain about in a hotel?
"Difficulty in getting ice."
What characteristics do you think you've inherited from your parents?
"Sense of humour from my father. Temper from my mother."
What's your culinary specialty?
"I boil a superb pot of water."
What's your greatest fear?
"Meaninglessness."
What music would you have played at your funeral?
"David Olney Live."
What's the greatest film ever made?
"City Lights."
Can you recite a line of poetry?
"How can I help but recite poetry?"
Have you ever been arrested?
"Yes, many times."
What turns you on?
"A switch on my left arm."
Happiness is...
"I agree."
Where are you off to now?
"Getting ready to invade Europe."
