Where does the name 'Fauna Flash' come from?
Roland: "The name doesn't really have a meaning. It's just a word that we like. When we finished our first 12'' we didn't have a name yet for the project. So we asked Michael Reinboth for advice. He has this little red book full of funny names, like for if you're looking for a name for a new discotheque or a new song. 'Fauna Flash' was in there, and we liked it. It sounds very science fiction, but it doesn't really mean anything. It's just 'Fauna Flash'!"
What makes Fauna Flash different from the other projects you're working on?
Roland:" It's our most personal project and it absorbs most of our time. A project like 'Voom Voom' is just
something we do in between, more for the fun of it. But with Fauna Flash we take all the time we need. That's also
why it's the most rewarding project."
What's your opinion on being called the best act on Compost Records?
Roland:"Well, it's difficult to say anything about that, because we're in the middle of it and there's so
much good stuff coming out on the label. You have the Jazzanova crew, the guys from Beanfield and so on. It's
hard to compare. We just do our thing and we hope that people like it."
Compost Records is located in Munich. Would you say that there's something like a 'Munich scene'?
Michael:"I wouldn't call it that, I'd call it a 'Compost scene'. It's nationwide and it goes across the
borders. Rainer Truby is from Freiburg and you've also got the Vienna boys, so it's not like it's limited to
Munich. In techno you have the Berlin scene and the Cologne scene, but I don't think you can compare that to
what's happening at Compost."
At Compost Records everybody seems to be working together in different projects. How did all that get started?
Roland:"Well you know, you meet a lot of people in clubs, people that like the same kind of music.
Compost Records is really made by people who have a common idea about creating music."
Is the 'Voom Voom' project on hold now?
Roland: Voom Voom is more like a holiday thing. We just do it in between, when we feel like it. It's not as
big and as serious as 'Fauna Flash'. It's not like there's a big planning. We've just released a new 12'' which
is called 'Ginger and friends', so it's not like the project's on hold now."
What's next for 'Fauna Flash'?
Roland:"We're going on a dj-tour that starts in Japan. Then we'll do the USA, Canada and then back to
Europe. We've been thinking about doing live-shows, but we're not sure about that yet so it's not something
for the near future."
Would a Fauna Flash live-show be purely electronic or would it include the musicians that played on 'Fusion'?
Christian:"That's what we're trying to figure out. There are quite a few musicians who collaborated on
'Fusion', so we'd have to take them along on a tour and that's not easy to organise. We've already played live
together with our bass player and we had a lot of fun so we know it's possible. Ideally a live gig should
include all the members of the 'Fauna Flash All Star Orchestra'."
