Gluecifer was always about the rock 'n' roll high life — 'Ridin' The
Tiger,'
'Soaring With The Eagles At Night To Rise With The Pigs In The Morning' — and
now suddenly you relegate yourselves to 'Basement Apes.' Why?
"Because this time we were locked in the basement for a much longer time,
banging out all the songs. The previous albums had a more glamourous
approach but a less glamourous sound; now it's vice versa."
'Basement Apes' seems to be a move to a more grooving, less "everything
louder than everything else" sound. Why did you make that decision?
"It just turned out that way, the songs sound different, so we changed the
sound too. We added different instruments than earlier and this is the
result; different, maybe even better..?"
Kaare Vestrheim of the band Lokomotiv did not only produce, but also plays
mellotron on a lot of
songs. Did he have a big influence on your sound?
"We have not heard so much of
that band, really. It was more of a coincidence that Kaare became our
producer. The guy we had intentionally planned to use said that Kaare was a
better man for the job, they shared the same studio, you see. But he did
definitely have an impact on
the sound. He was a very insipiring person to work with."
If the photo on the promo is a good indication you also exchanged your
glitter outfits for a shirt-and-tie mod style. Does that have anything to
do
with a change in musical direction or was it just time for something new?
"We exchanged our red velvet uniform shirts almost two years ago, we felt
there was a time for a change then and we just kind of developed that from
there. We think that we look better now. Some days we are a tad casual,
other days very posh."
The mellotron-driven psychedelic '60s pop of 'Little Man' is very different
from anything Gluecifer has ever done before. Can you tell a little more
about that song?
"It was a very different way for us to write a song. Initially it had an
entirely different melody, with different drums, a verse, a chorus etc. In
the wee hours, before we dumped the song all together, we erased everything
but the main guitar and started over. And this is the result, a very
different sounding Gluecifer song that never really climaxes, but just
keeps you hanging on until the next song starts."
Are those '80s hard rock (in particular David Lee Roth-era Van Halen)
influences I hear in 'Round And Round' and 'I Saw The Stones Move'?
"If that's what you hear, that's what you hear. Personally I get a kind of
'Back In The Saddle/Last Child' ('70s Aerosmith) feel from 'I Saw The Stones
Move.' 'Round &
Round' to me is like Cheap Trick meets AC/DC."
By far the most intriguing song title of the year so far is 'Powertools
And Piss.' What the hell is this song that includes lines like "I leave a
stain
in the middle of a carpet so clean, I'm going ancient baby, if you know
what
I mean" about?
"A carpenter gone bad. He takes a dump on the carpet and leaves a stain,
sometimes you just get what you pay for."
Some years ago, Biff Malibu was on a crusade against the face-painted
black metal-ers that were Norway's main musical export product. What's
happening
on that front?
"Biff gets tired of his earlier crusades, he is probably up to a new
crusade. Rumors have it that vegetarians are gonna get it now..
I have no idea what the black metal people are doing, maybe playing with
Lord Of The Rings game cards or something."
What's it with Norwegians and face paint anyway? Even the singer of Turbonegro
was into it. An old Viking tradition?
"Some of the old vikings were very ugly and needed a cover up, some of the new
ones to, although the singer you are referring to is not one of the uglier
ones."
Just a few years ago you could see Gluecifer about every three months in a
club near you. Can we expect such a grueling tour schedule again?
"We are going out on tour in April for about 6 weeks, then comes the summer
festivals then more touring. You'll probably see us a lot if you can."
And will Biff show some new body build moves?
"Yeah, he has been working out like a motherfucker, he's all pumped up and
ready to go. We call him Brutus these days!"
