How the devil are you?
"Fine, thanks. Getting excited to get back over to your side of the pond."
What was the first gig you ever went to?
"Gig? Well, the first live music I ever saw, besides going to family parties/shows, was either
Tanya Tucker or Jim Stafford or Mac Davis (!). The first gig I went to without my family would
probably be X, the greatest punk band ever to come out of LA. Or the Minutemen. Or REM... too many to
remember."
What were you like at school?
"I was one of those girls that hung out with cheerleaders AND Dungeons and Dragons players. I
indulged my bad influences and smoked lots of pot in my senior year. And made straight As... a
brainy surfer-girl WAY into the Pretenders and the Clash."
If you weren't a music star what would you be?
"Well, "star" has never really entered my vocabulary... As a very young girl, when I used to
dream about what type of job I'd one day have, I'd always see a closet full of business suits. I
never imagined what sort of work I'd do, but I knew I'd wear nice suits. Then I saw the movie
'Grease', and I wanted to be Olivia Newton John, the tough Sandy from the end of the movie with the
big hair. My Dad had an early Dolly Parton poster in his tool shed, and I used to stare at it and
think, "So this is the type of woman my Dad likes?" He taught me her songbook by the time I was old
enough to hold a microphone. The big hair came later."
What is your most treasured material possession?
"My wedding ring."
What's the worst record you've ever made?
"'Digging You Up', our major label fiasco record that was stolen from us when Polydor folded in
1999. And I like that record, but making it was so difficult for the band, personally, that I have
bad memories of it."
When did you last cry and why?
"Four days ago, in a Motel 6 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I think I was feeling sorry for myself."
What's your poison?
"I'm a beer slob. My favourite is Shiner Bock, and it's all the poison I can stand these days."
Pick five words to describe yourself.
"Ambitious, loyal, honest, organized, and kind."
What's in your pockets right now?
"Chapstick, stamps, sunglasses, and cigarettes."
Who was the last person you punched?
"I've never punched anyone in my entire life. I've been punched, but I was knocked unconcious
and couldn't swing back!"
What was the last record you bought?
"Kasey Chambers' 'The Captain'."
What are you most likely to complain about in a hotel?
"The smell. I always travel with incense. Or the pillows (except in Europe)."
What characteristics do you think you've inherited from your parents?
"A love of music, first and foremost. And my independent nature; believing in myself and
trusting the noises in my head."
What's your most unpleasant characteristic?
"Selfishness, I think."
What's your culinary specialty?
"Green chile chicken enchiladas. I just sent my mom the recipe yesterday."
What's your greatest fear?
"Flying cockroaches. Or flying in a thunderstorm."
What music would you have played at your funeral?
"Aretha Franklin's 'Amazing Grace'. The most spiritual music I've ever heard."
What's the greatest film ever made?
"The greatest? I should say 'Apocalypse Now' or 'Rear Window', but my favourite movie ever is
'Groundhog Day' with Bill Murray. I've seen it at least ten times."
Can you recite a line of poetry?
"This thing upon me/Great God/This thing upon me/Is not death/But dying will solve it's power"...
or something like that. From Bukowski's 'Old Man, Dead in a Room'."
Have you ever been arrested?
"Yes, in high school. My pot-smoking caught up with me in the parking lot of the Thunderbird
Lounge in Jacksonville, Florida, 1982. They had a rocking New Wave Night that my friends and I would
go to every week with our fake IDs, and we'd dance till they chased us out. We spent that night in
jail dressed exactly like the Go-Gos. Not my proudest moment."
What turns you on?
"Going to the beach. I love the sand and the sun and the salt water, the way your skin feels
with a sunburn. Going to the beach is like going to church for me... It's an absolutely holy place."
Happiness is...
"When you feel a song is calling you, and you pick up the guitar, and the words come rushing out
like it's a gift from the universe. Or playing with my dogs. Or sunsets in New Mexico. Or a meal
prepared by my husband. Or a week in Hawaii. Or having great conversations with a total stranger."
Where are you off to now?
"Home to my husband, who is cooking catfish and potatoes for dinner."
