Can you tell me something about how you guys got together? You used to
play in Pro-Pain and Soulfly, didn't you?
"Yes, I've done Pro-Pain for quite a while. I did two records with Pro-Pain. I
did Soulfly for about three-and-a-half months, as a temporary drummer on the
tour with Iron Maiden, Soulfly, and Puya. The band basically started before
the tour with Soulfly. When I was touring, Marc and Chris were writing the
demo. Shortly after I had finished touring with Soulfly we started jamming,
and we did a demo for RoadRunner records. They loved the band, they came to
see the band live, and we started touring, doing a lot of shows live.
Everything went great."
You guys mix the aggressiveness of Slipknot, the melodies of Tool and
Latin music to a nice cocktail using good musicianship as the shaker. Is this also the way you would describe your music?
"Yes. We love a band like Sepultura. They influenced us a lot. The stuff
that we wanted to do when we were ready to record was to be the best that we
ever did. We wanted to be the heaviest band, like Sepultura. And the prettiest
singing band, with nice vocals and vocal-hosts. Like Incubus, Staind, and Tool. At that time we were just writing
and writing, and because I love Rob Zombie I wanted some of the samples that
he had. It brings it to a good cocktail, like you said. It's very modern and
unique."
What direct relationship do you have with South America?
"I was born in South America, in Lima, Peru. My guitar player was born in
Brazil. My singer was also born in Brazil and raised in Venezuela. And then
there's the other 3 guys: the percussionist and the bass player were born in
New York, and the other guitar player (Mark Rizzo) is an Italian."
Your album is called Revolution Revolución. Ron St. Germain (Tool,
Soundgarden, Creed) produced the album with you, but is not mentioned on the
back of the album. What went wrong?
"He was supposed to produce it and he did so for the first three weeks. But
it wasn't working out. He was making the band too soft. So I took over the
production duty."
Did you have any experience producing albums?
"Yes, with demos."
What are Chris' lyrics about?
"The meaning of the record Revolution Revolución is: It's your revolution;
revolt against what you aren't happy about. Basically he's telling people:
"Fuck you!" If somebody is putting you down or changing your mind, he tells you
to do your thing and fuck them. It's a personal revolution and not a
political one."
I read somewhere that some guys from the band had a really bad youth.
They didn't have any money, and they didn't have any food so they had to eat
cats. Is it true?
"No, that was a joke! We call Jardell "the cat-eater." One day, back in
Brazil, he ate a cat and he didn't know that. He found out after he ate it.
That's why we call him the cat-eater. Funny you ask!"
Which bands have inspired you?
"Sepultura, Incubus, P.O.D. I love Linkin Park, and Puya are great friends of
mine."
You guys now have a major record deal. You are touring the whole world.
Was it hard to get where you are now?
"I love it, but it takes a lot of sacrifices. You start with no money and
you don't see your family. I've seen my girl eight days between each tour
and I'm on the road for eight months straight now. With Soulfly four weeks,
then Hatebreed, Spineshank, Fear Factory and Machine Head. And now Machine
Head again in Europe. It has been crazy. My family and my girl are my
strength in life."
What's your opinion on the current metalscene? Do you think nu-metal is
dead?
"No, I think metal is here and it will never go away. It will just change
its form. From rock to metal to nu-metal. It will never go away. I like the
nu-metal bands, because I like the old metal bands. All bands
should get a chance."
Choose one of the following and tell me why you chose it:
Touring or recording?
"Touring. It's more real. I don't do drugs, alcohol, or smoke cigarettes, but
those 30 minutes on stage are the best."
Heineken or Budweiser?
"I don't drink, so Coca-Cola. It's better than Pepsi. It's darker."
Doing a tour with Britney Spears or with the Village People?
"Britney Spears. I'd get to look at her every night. She's beautiful."
