JR Ewing's ignition was in '98. Were there any other bands you were
active
in before that?
"Yeah! Both me and Erlend played in different bands. I played in two
other bands. Those were just small local bands. Nothing similar to JR Ewing.
When I look back at those times, [they] were pretty fucked-up bands. We played
horrible metal crap."
What's the meaning of the band name JR Ewing?
"It's from Dallas, this '70s and '80s and '90s series. There is this
bad
guy, the main character. His name is JR Ewing. We just named the band after
him because he's a funny character, and me and guitarist Erlend love Dallas."
You decided to keep the very first demo away from the public. Was it
really that crappy?
"Yeah!! No doubt about that! It was recorded in a basement by a friend
of ours. What we did was put a distortion on everything, including the drums,
because we couldn't get the snare drum up. And that resulted in something
pretty crappy. I haven't heard it since. We buried it somewhere in the woods
and made a map and put it in a bottle... "
What happened with the old lineup? Was it hard to be as one again after
somebody new had joined the band?
"Well, not really. We changed the lineup, maybe three times. In the
first lineup our bass player went to jail because of some animal liberation
stuff. After that, our drummer left because of another band he was playing in
called Amulet. And then we had this Swedish guy, but he kinda freaked out and
moved back to Sweden. But it never has been hard, I think, except for the
times when people played their own things and wouldn't listen. But those
people eventually left the band."
What was going on through your minds after the debut release got totally
sold out?
"It was really cool. We didn't expect that at all! Like, there were
people who appreciated what we were doing."
You recorded the songs of the debut album later on, again, on The Singles
Collected. A pretty obvious title for an album like that, but what was the
reason for recording the same songs again?
"Don't know. Good question. We kinda regret it, but it's sold out. It
was
just more like an easy way."
A lot of compilations and splits have passed by the couple of years. What
is
the reason for not recording a full-length earlier? Was it a lack of
songs?
"One of the reasons was the whole situation with our drummer at that
time. Finding a new drummer. Just a lot of things happened. We stressed a
lot
before we entered the studio. The other reason was because we played a lot,
so
there was hardly time to record songs. But we're going to do it now."
How would you describe the music your band is creating?
"I don't know. A guy from Norway described it as Shout-Rock. That's
pretty cool actually. People have been labeling us as this and that, but we
just play the music we do. Some say 'you sound like Napalm Death' and some say
'like The Beatles.' It's up to the people. All I know is that it is not metal.
It's not hardcore because we don't have hardcore ideas. We're not muscled.
We
love rock 'n' roll, hardcore, punk. We just want to mix it."
You're also on a compilation about European and Japanese ideas (bands)
called Lucky 13. Can you tell me more about your opinion about the
American
part in this music scene?
"It's important for people to recognize also music from Europe. There
are
too many people that got sucked up by America. We played with crappy
American
bands as well as crappy European bands. I think they're both equal. People
just recognize American bands as much hipper. European bands just need to
get
over to America. I think we've been just lucky."
This is the last day of your European tour. What would the review be like
of those 8-to-9 days of being onstage and on the road? Did some strange
things happen?
"It has been great. A lot of people have shown up. Unfortunately nothing
really strange happened, haha."
Is there still something you definitely need to get rid of?
"We will be back on tour in August. That's gonna be cool. And hopefully
we'll have our new record out."
