Your music has many influences, from trash to punk to electronica. How would you describe your music yourselves?
"Punk."
Your songs are often extremely short. Why is that and how does your process of writing and composing your music take place?
"When we started Melt-Banana, we first tried to make songs simple, taking off all fats. that is why our songs became short. Usually I or Agata (our guitarist) bring ideas of song, or demo track. Some short songs were made in very short time, but for others we needed to take a long time to reach to the final shape."
Your lyrics are in English, your music has Western roots. Do your Japanese background, upbringing and culture manifest themselves in your music in any way?
"I think that our music has much more Japanese roots than western roots. We are influenced by many Japanese bands, like bands with whom we play with. And also noise music (so-called Japanoise) is from Japan."
Your lyrics are always printed on the sleeves of your records, so it's quite evident that you want them to be read and understood. But those lyrics are often very fractured and, to be honest, hard to comprehend. What do you mostly write about in your songs? Is there a recurring theme or message?
"It depends on the person who reads them. Actually analyzing is not my job. If I can explain all meaning in words that are easy to understand to all people, I don't have to write in that style. I write down what I see and feel and think in my life and mind."
I've heard from some people that they like your songs better when performed live than on the record. Do you have any idea why that could be so?
"I can understand that. Records and performance are different. We have been playing shows many many times and touring many places, so we maybe are much more like a live band. That's why I think."
I've heard that you tour the world all by yourselves, without any support. Apart from the obvious reasons (cheaper), why do you choose to go at it with just the 4 of you?
"Not all parts, but mostly 4 of us in Europe. In some parts, some guy came with
us to help. Also, before the European tour, when we toured in the USA we had 2 american loadies.
After the US tour, they quit. And we decided to tour by ourselves to challenge. Fortunately we did make it. We really appreciate people like booking agents, clubs, etc, who helped our tour."
I've read somewhere that Agata, your guitarplayer, suffers from some rare fatal disease that could kill him at any moment. Is that true? And if so, how do you deal with that situation as a band?
"He has a disease that doctors have not found the way to cure. And if the disease becomes very bad, he could be dead. But right now, he is doing fine, and getting better. Not sure if the disease will be vanished, though. So we need to support him especially during the tour."
Finally, where and how did Agata learn to play guitar like that?
"In his room, and on the stage."
