How important was it for Mogwai that Barry Burns joined the band before 'Come On Die Young', on a personal level and on a musical level?
"We weren't looking for another member at all after the whole Brendan
Palava, but Barry had been playing with us more and more and since he had
no obvious mental or social faults we asked him to join. On a personal
level it was good as he is very funny and on a musical level he is the
most proficient of us all. All in all a good catch."
In another interview (NME, 8 March 1999) you were talking about the choice of Dave Fridmann as producer. You mention that you were afraid to choose Steve Albini. How come?
"We hadn't finished writing the album when we had to choose a producer
and we felt that this would get us our arses kicked by mr Albini as he
apparently likes to work fast."
How do you name the songs?
"We usually steal them from magazines. The National Enquirer in particular."
Both Dutch shows recently you didn't play 'Punk Rock', which you once described as the
main song of 'Come On Die Young'. Did you have any particular reason for
that? Did you play it on the tour? Ever want to play it live with Iggy?
"We didn't have the sample with us then. We may do it now though. With Iggy
would be sublime although I don't know if he'd still agree with his
words now."
The old songs like Ithica, Helicon 1 and 2 sounded more complete on
the 'Cody' tour, partly because you developed as a band, partly because
you changed some parts. In Helicon one for example, you added some
flutes. Do you try to improve the songs while playing them live?
"We have to incorporate new members into the songs, this usually improves
them."
When you played at Bowlie festival, Godspeed You Black Emperor! played there as
well. Are instrumental bands like these a big inspiration?
"My favourite instrumental bands are Dirty 3 and Godspeed, but they are no
more of an inspiration than vocal bands like Yummyfur or Sonic Youth."
You also recorded a Guns 'N Roses song once ['Don't Cry', Peel Session 17.02.98 - Ed.]. Can we expect some more covers in the future?
"No, don't think so. Dominic doesn't like doing them."
Any particular songs which you personally would like to cover once?
"TV Eye. Amazing Grace."
Is a cover the ultimate tribute to another artist, or how do you think about covers?
"They are fun."
What's the story on Rage:man? You said you had some legal difficulties with the ownership of the song. Solved them?
"That was probably a joke of mine."
What's true about the rumour that Robert Smith (the Cure) called you once and what did you discuss?
"He e-mailed me to say he likes the band. He hasn't written since."
Any stories of (very) weird encounters with (very) weird fans?
"Just the usual weirdoes reading their own agendas into the songs and
stalking us around various continents. There are some really nice folks too though."
What's the worst trouble you've been in as a band?
"NYPD (New York Police Department) closed a show down because of the volume."
If you were jailed in prison and they had to play a song on the PA as a punishment, the whole day, the whole week...which song would that be?
"Gypsy Woman by Crystal Waters"
What do you think of the Internet and MP3 distribution in particular?
"MP3 is a bit worrying as it lets people obtain music for free. Bootleg
and rare stuff is ok but if it's off lp's then it is basically theft. If no
one paid for records then there would be no money to record them in the
future. I know that is stating the obvious but I don't know if a lot of
people have thought about that fact."
What do you want to achieve with the band?
"The ultimate drone."
What can we expect from Mogwai in the "near" future?
"An lp, a festival and an ideal for living."
