Name:
"Matthew Robert Chicoine, a.k.a. Recloose."
Where are you from?
"I was born in Salem, Massachusetts — 20 minutes outside of Boston."
Where do you live?
"I lived in Northville, Ann Arbor, and Detroit (all in Michigan) since 1986,
but have recently relocated to Paekakariki, New Zealand."
If you could live anywhere else, where would it be?
"I'm already living there! New Zealand, of course . . . "
First record:
"Soundtrack to Beverly Hills Cop."
What kind of music did you listen to when you were growing up?
"An odd array of things I'd hear on the radio — pop, electro, early rap. I
started to listen to more jazz, rock, and hip-hop in high school. And when
I was at home my pops used to love rocking out to Peter, Paul, and Mary
(ouch!)."
What kind of music do you listen to now, when you're not on the job?
"Mostly jazz, soul, and some more leftfield stuff."
What instrument(s) do you play?
"I can sort of play the guitar, keyboards, and saxophone. Well enough to use
in the studio but never in front of a crowd. Oh, and turntables, does that
count?"
How long have you been playing?
"I started on the piano when I was about 9."
Favourite album:
"Just one??? I've heard it too many times by now but Coltrane's 'Giant Steps.' "
Favourite musicians/musical groups/DJs:
"Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, King Tubby, Mad
Professor, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hathaway, Minnie Ripperton, Juan Atkins, Mad
Mike, Carl Craig, Anthony Shakir, Kenny Dixon Jr., Brian Eno, JayDee, Extra
P, Pete Rock . . . and I should stop there before I get carried away."
Worst job you've ever had:
"Cleaning toilets at my college dorm (community service . . . )."
Guilty musical pleasure:
"Not that guilty, but the Clash."
Best/Worst/Most Embarrassing club/DJ story:
"Vomit on the turntables. Yum!"
Five essential records:
"Get back to me, I gotta check the library . . . "
Where do you get your musical inspiration from?
"Life, love, music."
Favorite place to play/DJ and why:
"Anywhere in Japan because they go ape-shit!"
Favorite club/bar and why:
"Loop in Tokyo for the same reason."
The moment you knew your music was much more than just a hobby:
"The day I could pay the bills."
What do you miss most about home when you're travelling to gigs?
"My girlfriend and being able to lock the door and take the phone off the hook."
Best part of your job:
"Making music and developing as a creative person."
Worst part of your job:
"The airport and flying."
What keeps you going? What makes you continue with music?
"Encouragement from peers, and I can't imagine being happy doing anything
else. It's a love affair . . . "
What were you doing five years ago?
"Making sandwiches at the Russell Street Deli in Detroit."
Where do you see yourself five years from now?
"In a fat-ass beach side house in New Zealand with my name on the deed, a
full-blown recording and production studio, me and my girlie smiling with
rugrats surrounding us, and having a private jet to fly in friends from
around the world for musical collaborations."
