Former band Solid State is better known as Snapcase nowadays. What
happened to Solid State in '91?
"Mmmm, I don't know. Solid State just sounded pretty awful to us. We
wanted to get rid of that name so that's the reason for renaming the band
into Snapcase."
Who came up with the name Snapcase and with what thoughts?
"Well, actually I did. Why Snapcase? It just refers to someone who's
pretty crazy. Better known as 'snapped in the head.' "
Before the release of the first full-length album Lookingglasself, some
EPs and demos were recorded and released. Wasn't there enough material to
record a full-length album, or what was the main reason for releasing EPs in
the first place?
"We never even thought of making an album. But through the years songs
were written and we wanted to make EPs and 7-inches. After that, the
intention of recording an album was present, but unfortunately no one was
interested. After a while Victory broke the ice, and the first full-length,
Lookingglassself, was released."
What was it like to cooperate and record an album together with
(Victory label's) Boy Sets Fire in '98?
"Really cool. We already knew those guys already from gigs and it just
happened."
You're the only one who is still some sort of a persistent member of
Snapcase. What was it like to change your line-up from guitarist to lead
singer? Was there always the urge to grab the microphone?
"Ha ha, no. At that time I didn't want to sing. Unfortunately our singer,
Chris Galas, left the band so we were desperate for one. Because I was the
one who knew all the songs by heart I took the mic. It just happened."
What was the reason for changing the line-up many times through the years
of Snapcase's existence? Was it hard to see people (friends) come and go?
"Within those ten years of Snapcase, many ideas have passed by. People
come and go because they don't fit into the ideas, and then they leave on
their own. But since four years we're still with the same line-up."
You already recorded albums like Lookingglasself, Progression Through
Unlearning, Designs For Automation, and some split work. Now a new release is
coming up. Is there already a title for it, and if so, what is it called?
"It is tentatively titled 'Pariahs.' "
What can we expect of the new album?
"We already have written over 20 songs and brought about 17 into the
studio. I think we're going to record about 12 songs on the new album. So
hopefully plenty enough."
I heard the new album will differ from the others on all aspects. Can you
tell me more details about it?
"The new album will be much more diverse. Some parts will be more
aggressive and some less. We also spent much more time on the songs than we
ever did on the other albums. The new release will probably be different then
people are used to of Snapcase. It will probably be finished on the end of
May, and released somewhere between August and September this year."
Are you making progress with the new album? Is it getting near to
expectations?
"Yeah, definitely!! I'm very happy with the fact things are going now."
Snapcase is on the Victory label for about ten or eleven years now. What is it like to have this kinda deal with Victory?
"We're one of Victory's successful bands and things are dedicated to the
label. We've been treated very well by Victory's people, and that owns respect,
which we'll show in all kind of ways."
