What was the reason for Supersub leaving Virgin?
"Well, because the people at Virgin had the idea that JB Meyers was
about
to return. They had signed four boys, and when one leaves the band, things
end
quickly. They kept on hoping and also stressing that he had to come back,
but it
was not about to happen. We did give them a demo, but they still had the
idea
that JB should join the band again."
In what way did you notice the absence of JB the most, then? Did the
collaboration change?
"I don't really miss him; it's just a new approach right now. We don't
have
any problems with the songs. You write one and present it to the band, and
that'
s when everyone gives his own interpretation. We never had to deal with
disagreement."
Excelsior recordings released the album Mighty Baby. How did you get
there?
"When we decided to make another record, we started looking around to
see
who was interested. We also sent a demo to Frans Hagenaars. The people at
Excelsior had always followed us, so they already knew us well. And were
very
happy to get us, as well."
What do you think of this collaboration when you compare it to a larger
record label?
"It's very good; not a single bad thing about it. You immediately get
in
contact with everyone at the label. In the Virgin time, we only had contact
with
three people. When you had an idea, it sometimes lasted for two whole weeks
before you got a reply if it was all right. They constantly had to ask other
people what they thought of it. It's much easier at Excelsior. Within a day
you
hear if they agree with your suggestion and sometimes even immediately. They
can
decide things very quickly."
Mighty Baby was released in August but it had been delayed for a few
months.
Why was that?
"It's just not smart to release an album at the beginning of the
summer.
There's hardly any record company who does something like that. The club
circuit
is closed and most of the festivals have lineups ready far before the start.
There is a stop from six–to–eight weeks, and the radio is also
doing
different things. So we just had to wait for the summer to pass."
Supersub has a Dutch Top 100 hit with Easy To Run right now. What's
next?
"We're not completely sure, but I assume that I Wish will be the second
single. But our first single still gets a lot of airplay, so we just wait
and
see. But because this amount of airplay has been going on for some weeks, I
guess it will be over soon. But we're also doing some sessions at radio
programs
and a session at the popular Dutch talk show Barend & Van Dorp. And, at the
moment, we're also being played on the Belgian radio, so we're going to have
a
press day there, as well."
The last two Supersub albums were very strong, but you didn't have a lot
of
success. Aren't you very skeptical about possible success right now?
"It's just hard for every band to get a foot between the door, whether
you'
re from Holland or another country. There are a lot of good bands with a lot
of
good records. You have to hope that people are actually going to buy your
record. By releasing a single, you do reach a wider audience. I notice that
at
live concerts right now, everyone is singing along with Easy To Run."
Is the year 2002 still good for Britpop then?
"You name it Britpop; it's just that we make English pop music. We're a
normal guitar band."
Do you read the Mighty Baby reviews?
"People from the record label send them to me, so I read them."
But does a positive review make your day better, and does it get spoiled
when
you get a negative one?
"Oh no, not at all. It doesn't really affect me. Of course, it's a good
thing when someone seems to like the record. But you just have to do it by
yourself. I'm very happy with the record, and that's the main thing."
How heavily do you depend on the earnings from making music?
"It's the main thing for sure; it's what all the band members do. We
are
all focused on Supersub. Sometimes we're doing some projects at home, but
this
is the main target. You might know that the earnings aren't very high. When
you'
re planning to make a lot of money, you've chosen the wrong profession. Most
of
the money bands make from touring."
Are you looking forward to the upcoming concerts of the tour?
"Yes, it's really great. Things start happening again at the moment.
The
gigs we did so far went very well. The audience also responded very well.
Recently we played at the Uitmarkt in Amsterdam for a big audience, and a
lot of
people were already singing along. We still play the older songs. The people
who
have followed us through the years and bought our records really appreciate
this
the most."
What are the differences between Mighty Baby and the other
records?
"This one is more poppy and the production is different as well. The
last
albums were recorded in the studio, and that was the place where we worked
everything out. This one we recorded live in the practice room."
Also Divine Right?
"We recorded the basic version of Divine Right at first, and after that
we
invited the string section. I think this song is a good single candidate,
but it
's not sure if that will happen. For a first single, it was too tranquil,
and
you also have to take notice of the time in which you release a song. You
don't
release reggae in the winter. Divine Right is a song for the Christmas
atmospheres. But will we release it? It also depends on what the second
single
will do for us and how (many) copies of our album are sold."
And how are the sales at the moment?
"I don't have any idea. But to be honest, I'm not really thinking about
the
sales."
Any further plans for Supersub?
"We're also busy (with) the foreign countries, like Johan (from the
Excelsior label) is doing right now. Excelsior found a way in over there, so
I
hope we can do some gigs over there and convince people that we're a good
band.
But to do that, you have to get people in the places where you perform. It's
just wait-and-see if a band will reach a breakthrough. But hey, someone has
got
to be the first, so maybe it will be us!"
