Tricky question: Who's Woo?
"Andrew Dickson Guitar/vocals, Ryan Myshrall bass guitar, Phil Burns
Organ/vocals and Pat Conan drums."
You're described as a garage band. So did you guys start out playing in a garage? (I'd like to know more about the history of the band).
"We are a rock & roll band. We have also been called garage, rock, stoner
rock, punk rock, alternative, indie and a bunch of other horse shit.It does
not concern me too much as long as people give my music a listen. I started
the band in 96' writing songs on my guitar. There have been a few different
members since then. I like playing with different people and ejoy their
input (writing, sounds, ect...), however I have always considered this to be
my dream."
Your new record is entitled Les Sables Magiques. Est-ce que ça veut dire que vous êtes des sorcières? Just checking your French here. Seriously, what
does the title mean?
"The title comes from a state of mind I often get into during creation
period. During this time portals open and the band becomes "The Magic Sand
Band". It is a spiritual working title. We live in Quebec and that rubbed
off on the title."
Even though you guys live and breathe in Canada, your influences seem to be more American: the MC5 and the Stooges. Are there any Canadian influences? Of course smearing maple syrup over your body before going onstage doesn't count.
"Neil Young, Bruce Coburn, Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who, Lenny Breau,
Change of Heart and many other Canadians move me greatly."
What do you guys listen to nowadays?
"I listen to Ornette Coleman and Crazy Horse."
As I am an MTV kid, my attention span is 7 minutes. Most songs on Les Sables Magiques are roughly 6 minutes. Waddayaguysdoing? Testing my patience?!? Just kidding, why did the songs end up so long?
"You should smoke Heroin or perhaps turn the TV off. Tricky Woo have
offered many different songs to the world and will continue to do so. Some
long, some short and some inbetween."
"I keep falling down." Well, well, well, we like our beers, don't we? My
favourite beer is Hoegaarden. So what do you guys like to drink?
"I enjoy a nice glass of port wine, the occasional beer."
The band's based in Canada. How's the music scene like there? Don't say
it's just a bunch of Alanis M and Godspeed You Black Emperor! tribute bands?
"The Canadian music scene is hot and cold. Like most place on earth there are a large percentage of bands that serve the needs of the very young
(skate punk, new metal-rap-crap and second rate DJ culture stuff). Spoon fed
to the young by an apathetic media. This of course puts any hope of true,
honest expression in grave danger."
The touring never seems to end! Why do you performing so much?
"We don't tour that much. Britney Spears tour a lot more than we do. We play live in
front of people because it allows for expression and the music to take flight.
Ever had any Spinal Tap moments? Come on, you must have!
"There have been many Spinal Tap moments. I can feel like an "artist" all I want but we are apart of the entertainment world and that makes every day a page from the Spinal Tap script."
Since '97 you've released four records. What's wrong with you guys? Most
bands take more than three years to write a decent record...
"My whole mission in life is to make music. We have been prolific. Bands often put out a release and milk it 'till it's dry. Good for them, that is their business. My business is to bring it on, love can not take a break. This is however why Tricky Woo has problems with being put in a box. People are not into change, and this band has progressed rapidly.
On top of that you also have other bands. I only know of Andrew's band Electric Brains. What kind of music do you play? I picture an Electric Eels tribute band.
"The Electric Brains played 4 shows then broke up. That was the plan.We all do things on the side. I do not allow my members to get too busy with side projects."
Andy Warhol said everyone would have 15 minutes of fame. You have two minutes left. What are your last words?
"Andy Warhol was a sham as an artist. My paintings, sculptures and prints are much more moving and I also believe everyone has a life time of fame. The only audience you need is yourself."
