Your song "Sky Landslide" has to be a reference to the Fleetwood Mac song.
I don't give a damn what others say, I am saying your bedroom has a Stevie Nicks shrine where you kneel down every night and hum the entire Rumours
record backwards. Am I right or am I left?
"the main aspect of fleetwood mac that has always drawn us toward them is not
so much the "fleetwood" part, but the "MAC" part. i really think they were
on to something with that three letter word. "mac" became a regular part of
our vocabulary the minute we heard it. i remember being a kid and hearing
people say: "man! that guitar solo is so cool/dope/sweet/etc." or, "did you
see that gnarly/fresh/rad/etc. dunk?!!" but for me "mac" became a daily
phrase which i called upon to express myself in most all situations. the
beauty of this necessity being each person who heard this magical word
understood its magnitude- even if i myself could not comprehend my very own
attempts at communication."
It's been a looooooooooooooooong time since you last put out a record. Personally I think the "looking for a label" is a coverup, you are in
hiding after someone found you guys dressed up as the Village People stripping in a bar to Britney Spears songs.
"if a band is looking for a label- this means they don't have any offers yet
and they are hoping someone takes the bait. ("bait" meaning "recorded
product", and "they" meaning "us"). to pass the time while waiting to
become the next fleetwood mac there are plenty of employment opportunities
for able-bodied, willing souls. there are escapes from the grind, sometimes
they include dance, but they rarely include karaoke. "
Spasm Smash XXXOXOX Ox And Ass was an improvization experience. How do you go about doing
this? Do you stand on your head facing east before you enter the studio?
"i'm not sure you could call anything an improvisational experience when
these truths are adhered to: 1 you can see your collaborators. 2 you can
hear your collaborators. 3 you aren't deciphering music in the written form
while playing. 4 you know where your collaborators have been. 5 you know
your collaborators."
John Peel is a big fan of your music. The whole reason I am doing this interview is because I want to find out where he lives. Let's cut the
crap, what is his phone number?
"i recently lost my address book. i think i left it at the post office. the
post office has a "lost and found". the "lost and found" only contained
clothing. i've yet to disrobe in a post office. why would anyone want
someone else's address book?"
You've toured a lot in Europe. So what's up with that? And what's Kevin's fascination
with France? He moved there... but why? Does he like eating snails dipped in garlic sauce
or what?
"i haven't been to europe as much as you might think. but, i have been
taking a european language class so i can learn the language. when i return
i hope to fit in with the local europeans. kevin does live in paris, he is
married to a girl from the area, he speaks the language that is spoken
there. when i learn how to speak european i may be able to converse with
him."
Why don't you record some new material?
"all of our songs are fleetwood mac songs. we change the tempo a little,
maybe rearrange some of the notes- this makes it less easy to discover our
versions of what are, essentially, f-mac covers."
Everyone focuses on the Lo Fi side of your music. How would you describe
your music? Personally I like the term squigglecore the best.
"i also like "squigglecore", other terms which have merit are; skronk,
voodoo-billy-love-punk, skree, and, ...nah, those aren't even words."
Look, pal, what's the deal with your titles: "Lick Observatory Spectrohelioscope",
"Vexation Fruits", "Lyrical Nozzle", "60 seconds over medium",... I don't understand those words! How
do you come up with these titles?
""lick observatory" is an actual observatory where astronomers view the
heavens. i've been there but i can't remember where it is. "vexation
fruits" are the little red berries which grow on a vine in our backyard. i
can tell you these are not the kind of fruits you find in the supermarket.
"lyrical nozzle" is just what it sounds like- words coming out of a powerful
hose at a speed above the normal comprehension level- if the song is played
extra slowly, a secret message will unfold. "60 seconds over medium" is
about eggs. breakfast is the most important meal of the day no matter when
it is eaten."
Can I just say that I love the artwork. That's actually the main reason
why I like Trumans Water. Personally I think it just looks cool to walk around with your records.
Why don't you go for the cute digitally cleaned up
babes in thongs on the cover?
"lo fi best describes the artwork on our albums- kevin #2 has a stockpile
of old magazines which he recycles in the form of artwork. the process is
constant and reportedly has therapeutic qualities. lo-fi is a derogatory
term when it comes to music. did you know that dylan (my friend who i play
music with sometimes) was dating a girl whose father is ted templeman?
well, he was THE producer for warner brothers records for YEARS. he used to
get these rockers like van halen and the doobie brothers- these people were
witless around the studio and needed someone to manipulate their sound so
that it would become hi-fi. otherwise, these bands would have sounded more
like us. what we have tried to recreate is what these classic bands would
have sounded like before they were corrupted."
Trumans Water is head music or body music? This is of course a sly attempt of me to find out your views on the introduction of the Euro next year.
"you mention the introduction of the "euro". is that some kind of
slang-language that the kids are speaking over in europe? like some kind of
futuristic-cyber-speak or something? i haven't heard of this in class."
I can't stand anymore... I have to ask it! I promised I wouldn't ask it
but I can't help it: When will you release your next record?
"the new album should be released may/june on the emporer jones label."
