(K-RAA-K)3 equals what?
"(K-RAA-K)3 means nothing, it's the sound of vinyl and everything what is
more-or-less out of control. It's also a way of catching the attention. =)
It started as a very small label, later we added mailorder, distribution and
export distribution (= distribution to other, foreign distributors)"
Who's behind the name "(K-RAA-K)3"?
"We are with two persons, Johan and me. The tasks aren't split, we just
handle as many as possible."
If you had to put the (K-RAA-K)3 sound into words, what definition would
> you would you come with? Is there such a thing as a (K-RAA-K)3 sound?
"No, there isn't a (K-RAA-K)3 sound but we focus on electronics, noise and
post-rock and especially everything that is in between. I won't say we try to
fill that territory but that's where our activity can be situated"
Before setting up the (K-RAA-K)3 label, you were already busy recording music. Can you tell us more about that?
"Yes, before (K-RAA-K)3 there was the Toothpick tapelabel. I was responsible
for Toothache, the electronica sub-department =) Some of the artists continued on (K-RAA-K)3"
Can you give us a brief history how "(K-RAA-K)3" came into existence?
"Toothpick started with 4 persons, there where some musical quarrels, and so
a new label was started"
Why did you decide to set up "(K-RAA-K)3"? When establishing the label, did you have a rolemodel?
"Why? Just because I wanted to do it. I like the way the underground-networks
are established and it's a cheap way of discovering lots of (new) music. In
the beginning there wasn't much direction. Now we are sure we want to do it
the line of Touch, Corpus, Blast First or Drag City."
What are the main bands on your label?
"We don't have main bands. I dislike the way a lot of contemporary labels
ask known artists to release singles on their labels. So we surely want to
work with all our artists on longer terms."
Are you also involved in making music? If so what kind of music do you play?
"no, no time left... in my spare time i'm busy with photography and design"
How do you find bands, do you go looking for them or do they send you demos? What do you want to hear on the demo?
"Most of the bands we discover are through accident. Only one person
conquered our hearts with a tape, it's ES, a Finnish boy. Very soon we
release his first album."
How does the new century look like?
"Lot's of releases are planned for near future: Twenty Six cd, Adlib cd,
Azusa Plane cd, Dean Roberts/Alan Licht cd, Es cd, Jeck/Schaefer locked
grooves lp,... think most are very, very nice and we found the right
direction.
We will also enlarge our mailorder services. Everybody who ever ran a
small mailorder company with some records knows it's hard and difficult to
organize, the basic elements are already online but it's still not what it
should be. The export department will also be enlarged. That's a service we
offer to distribute labels in Europe. Europe is very difficult for having
good distribution, lots of evil people, and you need at least one in each
country. We centralise different labels, so they can order from different
labels at once. It works well."
Apart from running a recordlabel, you also do mailorder. What labels do you distribute? Does it have to compliment your label?
"There are lots of labels we distribute online. It's split in four
categories : electronica, pop, obscure and various media. Best to navigate
to the website (www.kraak.net) yourself."
How does Internet affect your label and mailorder business?
"It doesn't really affect it yet. Yes, we get more orders online, but still
most people are lazy and buy what the shopkeeper likes. We have good
distribution all over the world, so 90% of our stuff gets out that way."
Besides putting out records, doing mailorder, you also organize concerts, right? Can you tell us more about those events?
"We organize concerts irregularly as promotion and to get in contact with
people/musicians in reality. That's fine after long e-mail conversations. =)
There will be a next festival in copyright with lot's of video and multimedia.
The normal band-concerts became too boring for me."
What would be a choice cut?
"The latest Kohn cd contains everything what (K-RAA-K)3 is all about :
seriousness combined with humour/crazyness, electronica combined with pop
and noise."
