First of all who are the human creatures behind Sub Rosa?
"Just a few people. Fred Walheer, Gauthier Keyaerts and myself, Guy-Marc Hinant."
Is there a story behind the name Sub Rosa?
"Sub Rosa is Latin and translates to between us, under confidence... Our second label, which is the Electronica department of Sub Rosa, is called
Quatermass. It's named after the English Sience Fiction film of 1958."
What made you start up a recordlabel?
"The end of the eighties with a spoken word record by William S. Burroughs."
How did you finance your first recordrelease?
"With nothing. We started by releasing one vinyl record, then another record 6 months later and so on...
Now we have made more than 250 productions. It is kind of a flux."
Ever had any weird and/or funny experiences while releasing records?
"For us, each record, each production is an experience in itself. One day I wrote a name on a piece
of paper. It was somebody I wanted to work with. And two days later this man was on the phone..."
So how do you find new artists? Do they approach you or is it the other way around?
"We listen, we receive demos, we also organize and create our own themas. Then we contact the possible musicians and try to keep a coherence."
Are there any recordlabels that you admire?
"Basically I like the labels which release risky things, Noise and spoken word records...Mode is fine. It's
located in New York and releases records by Cage, Feldman, Wolff... Another is Touch, located in London. We
began approximately at the same time. But they explore only one direction - which is fine - even if our politic
is exactly the opposite. Also the label Asphodele from Brooklyn..."
Any other influences (besides recordlabels) that inspire you?
"We are certainly more inspired by books or films than music itself. From the beginning we were under the
influence of William Burroughs and Gilles Deleuze. We also admire Thomas Pynchon, James Joyce and
Raymond Carver..."
I noticed your have a website, though still under construction. How does the internet influence your label?
"Our site comes soon...for us it's mainly a way to exchange information. An encyclopedia thing."
How would you define the Sub Rosa sound? And has it changed over the years?
"No definition. Just a vision of things to do. We have no specific sound, just a way to approach the sound."
If you could pick anyone you like, what musician (or group) would be on your Sub Rosa label?
"We are very impressed with Calla..."
Can you give a small list of the artists signed to Sub Rosa? What would be the best starter?
"Subsonic 6 which is Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Dinosaur jr) and Rudy Trouvé (ex-dEUS, Kiss My Jazz), "End of Utopia" featuring dj Spooky, dj Wally, dj Low and dj Grazhoppa. Or "Sub Rosa versus Kompakt". Kompakt is a German techno label. The record features remixes by Autechre, To Rococo Rot, dj Olive, Freform, Scanner, Neil Harvey.... "Luna Park/avant garde
voices 1913-1974" featuring James Joyce, Antonin Artaud, Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, Julian Beck, Ma¥akovski, Apollinaire, Kurt Schwitters.... There's also "Bill Laswell: Oscillations" with remixes featuring Nico, Scanner, Ui, Endemic Void, Atom Heart...."
