It was about three years ago that Marcel worked in a record store in Amsterdam. He was surprised
about the fact that most of the CDs he sold (more than 90%) were from bands from the US and UK, while
he thought there must be bands from Holland that are just as good as the bands from the US and UK.
This was proven when Marcel went out and saw some great gigs by unknown Dutch bands. One day, after a
great gig, he just walked up to the band and asked them if they wanted to release a CD with him.
So, Transformed Dreams was born, and the first release was called 'Shanghaied' by a band called the
Gluemen, a band often compared to the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Pavement, and Ween.
Marcel's main goal was to give unknown, but promising Dutch bands a chance to release their first CD.
THE PHILOSOPHY:
Marcel choses his bands by visiting concerts. It may look like that Transformed Dreams only releases
guitar bands, but this is not correct. The most important thing for Marcel is that a band can do a
great live gig.
Marcel's personal taste decides what will be released. "If I saw a great
drum'n'bass act I would release it."
"The best place to sell a band's CDs would be at the venue after the gig, so everyone who loved the
gig can by his copy." Marcel tries to get his music to the right place without a big promotional
campaign. There isn't money enough for such a thing, but he also doesn't like the attitude most
promotional campaigns have. The last thing Marcel wants is that someone buys a CD and listens to it
only once. "CDs should end up with the people who like them."
During the recording of a CD, Marcel is always there to make the bands feel comfortable. He cooks,
does the shopping, and takes care of a lot of other practical things, so the bands can focus on
making music. He sees himself as an outsider during the recordings. He judges the recording. Only if
he and the band like it, is it good enough to put on a CD.
THE PLAN:
When Marcel founded Transformed Dreams his plan was to release only the first CD of a band. At this
point it was time to reset his plan. He's already released the second CD of the artist Dan Geesin and
the band Seedling. Also a second album by Zoppo is being prepared.
"That release of the second Dan Geesin CD happened before I knew it, so I had to start thinking about
releasing second CDs by bands. I accepted it, but it still feels a bit weird."
For the future Marcel would like to do some split releases with other labels. This way more bands get
a chance to put out a record, and a split release will save money for the labels.
Another idea is to release two bands on one CD. "Most of the time 35 minutes is enough for a band to
create a total image of their music, this means you could easily put two bands on one CD."
He also likes to tour with his bands in countries like Belgium, Germany, and England and cooperate
with bands from those countries, to release their music, and let them play in Holland.
Only at this moment Marcel hopes he doesn't see too many good bands, because he doesn't have the
time, nor enough money to do other releases than the ones that are planned at the moment.
But, as far as Marcel is concerned, "everything will go as it goes."
