How did Cosmic Flux come to be? Could you give me a quick rundown of your history?
"It started in 1995 as a drum 'n' bass label. Just the need to hear and
champion the cause of good music. During the height of the junglist/drum 'n' bass movement, we started a weekly called Ikon Massive. It grew from there, and the rest is... well, you know the ending."
Did you see a gap in the music market that you were trying to fill?
"Not really. I mean if not us then somebody would have taken the initiative.
You have to understand that some of the best ideas come out of duress, so
it's up to us as distributor and consumer to make the choice whether or not
the gap is full, or are we still hungry for something different."
What is your sound today, as compared to when you first started the label?
"Well, defining sound to me has always been a dodgy term. I mean, your love
of reggae shouldn't outweigh your love of ska music, or any other genre for
that matter. Especially when you run a label. It's dangerous to be biased
in this biz, but if I had to define, then I would say 'soulfully mature music.' "
What do you look for when you sign artists?
"I have no problem with signing the geek next door or the weirdo eclectic
who thinks that he's from Jupiter. If it has that 'oomph' that's all I need."
Do you encourage artists to send demos? What initially draws your attention?
"Yes we do. When I pop it in, I don't say to myself 'why am I listening to
this past the 10 second rubbish quota.' "
If they weren't signed up already, who would you add to the Cosmic Flux
artist roster?
"Now that's a two-part question. As far as a major artist it would be Stevie
Wonder — need I say more? As far as an electronica-type group: The High
Llamas. They continued where the Beatles, Quincy Jones, the Beach Boys, and
Serge Gainsbourg left off in the '60s and early '70s, and they are also the
production team behind Stereolab!"
What does a typical day at Cosmic Flux headquarters look like?
"Not to try and exceed the saying 'GODDAMMIT' quota when something goes
wrong. We are only allowed 10 cuss words a day in the office, you know."
What is your goal with Cosmic Flux? What do you hope to achieve?
"Not to get 'pop the champagne' excited when we sell only 2,000 units of
something! The days of 5,000-plus are looming close, trust me!"
What is the strangest experience in the label's history?
"It's a dance music label. Every day is strange."
