What - in short - is the history of In The Red? How did it come about?
"I started in 1991 - 10 years ago. I wanted to put out a Gories 7"."
How would you describe the In The Red sound? What are the qualities you look for when signing
artists to the label?
"Raw rock'n'roll music. Music with soul. Music based in the blues or r&b a lot of the time."
If they weren't signed up already, is there any band you'd love to snatch up without hesitation?
"'68 Comeback and Doo Rag are the two bands I wish were on my label that are not - I've done
singles with both of them, though."
What does a typical day at In The Red Central look like?
"Chaotic. I share my office space with my girlfriend who runs a catering business - lots of
groceries and lots of boxes of CDs."
Whereas most indie labels are connected to a local scene, the In The Red acts come from all over
America and even Japan. Is there any connection between the Burbank music scene and ITR and how you
find your bands?
"First of all, there is no Burbank scene - no music happens in Burbank. The LA music scene is
pretty bleak too - I could count all its worthwhile bands on one hand, but I won't. I pick music that
suits my taste to put out on my label - sometimes I find it, and sometimes it finds me."
Mick Collins seems to be involved in some way or another in at least 50% of the In The Red
releases. Does he have a special role or status at the label, or is he just another artist who happens
to be a workaholic?
"I'm a big fan of Mick. As I said, this label started in order to do a Gories single. He's my
favourite singer, and he's a gifted producer. He's basically a genius. I do as many things as I can
with him."
A lot of In The Red acts have previously released albums on other labels like Crypt or Matador. Do
you pick them up after they've been dropped, do they come to you, do you steal them away, or how does
it work? And why do they fit in with In The Red and not with the other labels?
"I think you're mistaken on this one. A lot of In The Red acts have done records with these
labels AFTER I've worked with them. I did a Gories single as my first title (well before they were on
Crypt) - I was in no position at the time to ask to do more than a single with them. A Cheater Slicks
album came out on Crypt (a compilation) after I'd done three albums with the band. Even the Jon
Spencer Blues Explosion had done a single with ITR before releasing their music on Crypt. Crypt was my
very favourite label when I started, though, and Tim Warren is someone I would also classify as a
genius. As for Matador, the Demolition Doll Rods and the Bassholes are the only bands that have been on
both my and their labels, and both groups recorded for Matador only AFTER releasing numerous titles on
ITR. In the Bassholes case they went from being on ITR to Matador back to ITR. The Demolition Doll
Rods are already dropped from Matador as well. This said, I've got an upcoming Country Teasers album
due in 2002 - they were on Crypt first."
Garage bands and internet don't seem to mix, just see the lack of decent websites... Typical of a
technophobic genre or just lack of budget?
"Probably both. The garage rock genre is such a small one that there just isn't much out there to
see on the internet. Rock'n'roll music and computers don't mix, I guess."
Not only the music, but also the packaging of ITR records is always raw and simple. A deliberate
choice or again a case of budgets?
"It started as a necessary thing, but I do prefer stripped-down packaging and crude-looking
packaging to the slick stuff. It's deliberate, I suppose."
What does the future hold for In The Red?
"Who knows? Rock'n'roll music is not the popular favourite it once was, but I will continue to
release the stuff I like as long as I can afford to."
