Better late than never: Loyal and newly-initiated epicures alike fast became gluttons for the group's fourth album, as the lights dimmed and Cake's trademark disco ball began spinning.
Opening the show with Comfort Eagle, also the new LP's title track, the five-piece demonstrated that they haven't progressed in style, but instead are turning out more of their special brand of funk and rap-infused cow punk. Besides following a rappy groove that can be found on previous albums, Comfort Eagle reiterates Cake's penchant for social commentary through their lyrics.
Meanwhile, other Comfort Eagle hits Love You Madly and Short Skirt/Long Jacket, mixed into the hour-and-a-half set, rehashed singer-songwriter John McCrea's favourite musings on girls and love.
Donning a baseball cap and sunglasses, McCrea, with his gut hanging out over his trousers, looked like a bearded Homer Simpson holding a political rally as he guided the band and the audience through a sumptuous mix of mainly old material.
Favourites including Sheep Go To Heaven, Jesus Wrote A Blank Check, The Distance, and Never There were dynamite live, while Sad Songs And Waltzes reminded the group's clean-shaven, Oxford shirt-wearing followers that the group are simple country boys at heart (despite being from Northern California).
And, Cake also demonstrated why they are quirk-rock masters with the weird lyrics of Italian Leather Sofa, to name just one tune: "She doesn't have to use force / When she gets what she wants / She puts the rest on a tray / In a Zip-loc bag in the freezer."
Eight years on from their first album, Motorcade Of Generosity, Cake have refused to change. They're still using the same ingredients to bake their unique creations. Although Comfort Eagle is slightly less spicy than previous offerings, fans don't mind the taste. Well made and well presented, their latest show was an excellent feast indeed.
