After they released one of this year's best albums ('Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Gone'), I was very eager to see the live performance from Do Make Say Think (DMST), now on an extensive European club tour.
Coming from the same city (Toronto) and the same label (Constellation) as Godspeed You Black Emperor!, you would expect a similar sound, but apart from the long songs and the presence of melancholic melodies, DMST is much more jazz-orientated. Having a surprising line-up consisting of a guitarist, two drummers, an altosax-/guitar-/bass-/flutist, a trumpet-/bass- (six-string fretless)/guitarist, and trumpet-/tuba-/keyboard player, they produced a very original approach to experimental jazz/postrock. The songs, all instrumental, were played excellently (sound was very good too), although the guitar player wasn't always as tight as the rest of band. But that fact made the performance more loose and spontaneous.
Most of the musicians changed instruments between the songs, and that alone made the performance more impressive, and the two drummers playing sometimes totally against each other with different polyrhythms made the impressiveness even stronger. They played most of the songs of the above-mentioned album and also a few songs from their self-titled debut and a couple of impressive new songs. Their whole presentation was very convincing and down to earth, without any show elements (they would be totally out of place anyway), and the songs were played with much enthousiasm.
The perfect listening experience, and this was increased by the almost perfect venue: Zaal Belgie in Hasselt is a small jazz/artclub with a very low stage and tables and chairs all around the stage (same for the small balcony), thus creating a very cozy atmosphere. And the fact that the audience was great too (everyone was quietly listening until the last feedback faded away) made it a truly magnificent evening. A fantastic band, great songs, good audience, perfect venue. Impressive. Definitely a must see.
