The 'Robots In Disguise' conjure up pictures of 80's childhood and never being able to afford the main transformers such as Optimus Prime (boring old robot-truck) and the most evil robot in the world Megatron (robot-gun which speaks for itself)! But obviously, I was not expecting people dressed as the toys and changing from one shape to another.
Then two girls appeared on stage with identical futuristic clothing and bizarre lip and eye makeup, and eye being singular! The most distinctive part of their image was their mullets. yes mullet, the dreaded hairstyle of the rock gods, but somehow it fitted in with their look and didn't look bad at all, and I never thought that I would ever say a mullet look good.
Watching them live was like being transported back to 1979, and watching some bizarre punk performance art, way before transformers had even been thought about. The music was mixture of pre-programmed drum rhythms with live guitars, sometimes even a recorder and their perfectly matched vocals. You could tell their influences was a blend of Velvet Underground, Joy Division, Toyah or some other girl orientated punk from the late 70's, and I must not forget the greatest robots of all time... Kraftwerk!
The crowd took a while before they started appreciating the girls' robot mimicking voice banter, and by the end, some of them even wanted to buy the album! It was a bit of a poor turnout, but the gig had been billed as a local band headline. I'm sure that if they ever venture into the darkest midlands again, excluding Dudley, more people will turn up and spend all their gold. Megatron of a gig rather than a two-stroke change key ring.
