For the second time this year, Dillinger Escape Plan is doing a European tour. The first one was in May, together with three other bands, among which was Candiria. On this current tour, the band brought two far less suitable bands. Shat, the opening act, shouldn't even be called a band. It's more of an act. Shat are three guys with 30-foot fake dicks hanging between their legs, a Gwar-type singer, and a lot of crappy lyrics about sex. Maybe it's controversial to sing about virginity, lesbians, and tit fucks in the U.S.; over here nobody can really be bothered. But Shat did make the crowd laugh. And who would say no to a live tit fuck?
Ever since Refused broke up, clones of the band are popping up like mad.
The Icarus Line, musically right in the middle of Refused and the International
Noise Conspiracy, is one of them.
The band played their
emocore with passion and it was a good show, but it just lacked the
aggression and sense of experiment needed for a DEP support act.DEP
themselves, however, made the wait more than worthwhile. Their technical terror
was brought on with so much energy that one needed nothing further to be
convinced of the band's quality. They kicked off with Sugar Coated Sour from the
brilliant
Calculating Infinity CD. Singer Greg Puciato proved his vocal qualities,
having absolutely no problems with the songs from Irony Is A Dead Scene, the EP
recorded with Mike Patton. It is amazing how close DEP gets to their album
stuff, hence the Aphex Twin cover Come To Daddy. No matter what goes on in
front of the stage, ON stage is where the action is. The whole band just
went nuts, musically and physically. When I looked over my shoulder, Dick
Dale, who just finished playing the other stage, was standing there
with his guitar around his neck, trying to play along with the monstrous
riffs. I think he gave up after about half a song.
