The Hives and the Hellacopters managed to draw a pretty good crowd to the Melkweg, although they're still not as popular as Craig David. The 2-step star was playing at the same time in the Melkweg's other hall, and no 15 year old girl was going to miss it, even if it meant they had to pay 150 guilders to a scalper. I bought my tickets for the Swedes at the door for fl 17,50. That is, after I took some unvoluntary extra exercise, because I'd left my wallet at home. Fortunately the Hives started late, so I was just in time. The Hives' set was short and felt a bit rushed, maybe because they were behind on schedule. In spite of these drawbacks they still gave a very good show. The set consisted almost only of tracks from their latest album, the masterpiece 'Veni Vidi Vicious', which were played thight and without frills. The icing on the cake is that frontman Howlin' Pelle combines the moves & charisma of a young Mick Jagger with the humour of Biff Malibu (Gluecifer). Check them out on their headlining tour of Europe in february. Nicke Andersson of headliner Hellacopters is nowhere near as charismatic as Howlin' Pelle, but has already an impressive discography, that shows he knows how to write a great song, whether it's death metal, rot 'n' roll or sleaze rock. The problem is that since Dregen Hellacopter was replaced by the more hardrock Robert Dahlqvist, he also knows how to ruin a great song: add too many guitarsolos. The new album 'High Visibility' probably has some great tracks on it, but the 3 guitar solos containing, twice as long live version tends to drag a little. Even with that said, the Hellacopters are still an above average live band, which potentially could be great. What was great was the encore, for which the Hellacopters were joined by Detroit rock-legend Scott Morgan of Sonic's Rendezvous. The blistering rendition of 'City Slang' that closed the show was the absolute highpoint of the rockyear 2000.
