The Hives are a gleeful contradiction. While most manufactured bands suck, these five punk puppets from Fagersta, Sweden, are completely loveable. Assembled by the mysterious Randy Fitzsimmons in 1993, their act has steadily increased in global popularity.
Instead of taking the glitzy, pop approach that most ready-made creations do, The Hives have mixed a fifties look and sound with madly fast tunes and an even madder frontman to win a fanbase. As an extra flourish, no one knows Fitzsimmons' true identity, as he sends the band members new songs when he wants to release a new album.
Headlining the first night of the Lost Weekend festival, the group's twenty-something, mostly male audience was glad to see them back after they went to the top of the UK charts in '01 with their "best of" album Your Favourite New Band.
Opening up with a blaring version of A Get Together To Tear It Apart, it's obvious that it's their party piece, as lights flashed, the volume was cranked to 11, and singer Howlin' Pelle Almquist quickly jumped into his sea of followers. Dressed in their uniform black suits, and white ties and shoes, the Kings of the One-Minute-30-Second-Songs amazingly delivered 11 in 45 minutes, including fifth-gear versions of Die, All Right?, Supply And Demand, and Main Offender, interspersed with long chats by Pelle to himself and fans. Of course, their most mouth-watering hit, Hate To Say I Told You So — the reason why everyone bought The Hives' latest album — was the climax of the entire night, as everyone sang along and the moshing reached frenzied heights.
By being honest, The Hives are playing the pop music game and winning. They are a simple, crazy bunch, who never try to be more than the crowd pleasers they deem themselves to be.
