New York-based fifteen-member ensemble Antibalas come with their second long player on Ninja Tune. Musically, nothing has changed since their stunning debut Liberation Afrobeat Vol. 1: Fela Kuti's afrobeat is still the basis of Antibalas' music, combined with the influences of the band members' different cultural backgrounds (Latin-American, Afro-American, Asian-American, African, and Anglo-American). But in this case, no change is good. Talkatif is, like its predecessor, an explosive, retro- yet fresh-sounding cocktail that should only be handled with care and by experts. When touched by amateurs, it blows up in their faces; so for us humble ignoramuses it's best to just listen, feel, and dance to the greasy bulletproof grooves of Antibalas. Which is, in itself, inevitable. Talkatif will have the hardcor-est KKK member shakin' his booty like there's no tomorrow.
