Once, in the early 90's, there was a type of music called grunge. This hybrid
of stoner rock and heavy metal was quite popular for a while, but then the
dot com boom came and the demand for genuine heavy and dark music disappeared
almost completely. The still existing teenage angst niche was McDonaldized by
Limp Bizkit and the rest of the world switched to Santana's hippie rock and
Britney's bubblegum.
Now that recession and terrorism dominate the headlines, the return of grunge
could be upon us. All girl trio Bottom from New York makes a good effort.
They still lack the right slacker mentality, doing two tours at the same
time, and look way too healthy, but the current situation in Central Asia
probably makes heroin hard to get anyway. The music is real thing though:
heavy grooves are interlaced with psychedelic phased out guitar solos and
singer Sina's classic metal voice. Bottom's sound is quite similar to that of
My Sister's Machine, a good band that was crushed by the brilliance of the
Alice In Chains's and Soundgardens. Bottom is likely to get more chances to
develop in the current lean rockscene. And that's a good thing, because
although 'Feels So Good When You're Gone...' is far from a bad album, its
best tracks, 'Got Meth.' and 'Angermeistar' show that Bottom's still capable
of more.
