"So listen to my bubble go pop / I'm blowing bubbles, I'm blowing bubbles." The intentions of Call And Response's debut immediately become very clear: singing about the uncomplicated life in an easy tune style. Like Papas Fritas did before them: Sixties pop meets Eighties disco with a boy/girl singing duo. The band from San Francisco went into the private Kindercore studios in Athens, Georgia, where they received some help from Olivia Tremor Control's Bill Doss and Of Montreal's Derek Almstead and came out with a promising result. Too many influences you recognize to put them all down, but the sound of Stereolab, Papas Fritas, and Masters Of The Hemisphere is very prominently combined with the charming melodic style of Heavenly. The band aren't afraid to combine vintage synths with some violin and trumpets, while singing about imaginary places, roller-skating, and California. The parts when they try to step away from the sunny themes and music on When The Lights Are Out and The Fool are immediately the least interesting moments. Call And Response can continue to produce the ultimate happy songs without provoking irritation. "The clouds are gone and the sun is bright / Spring feeling got a hold on you." A promising debut that reminds you why people invented the ooh-aah choirs.
