Should you have heard of Chokebore? Yes and no! To be honest, I had never heard of Chokebore before. Should I have? Maybe, because this is already their fifth full length. Should I have heard of Chokebore recently? Not really. It took the band four years to come up with a new record. Now the question is: Was it worth waiting? Since I don't know how the other four CDs sound, I will just judge this CD on its own merits. To go short: Yes, I think it was worth waiting for. 'It's A Miracle' has that quality of sounding both familiar and new at the same time — yes, indeed the 'Coldplay quality.' Maybe it's just the lead singer's voice (a little higher than normal, a little nagging, and a little compelling); maybe it's just the songs that stand out. This is clearly a pop album, but don't stop reading now. I'm not using the word pop as in the dirty word for 90 percent of the shit that is in your local top 40, 50, or 100; I (also) use pop for that kinda muzik that we at KM file under "rock," but which is not really rocking. Yes, I do mean quality pop. Think of the older Killing Joke work, for instance. So think real songs, strong lyrics (sometimes funny and sweet at the same time: "You always fall asleep / Every single night / It's beautiful as filtered light"), introspective, and unexpected rhythms. I also mean dreamy, almost delirious songs (Police) and romantic epics (Ultra-Lite). Favorites? The strong rocky opener 'Ciao L.A.' and the song with the beautiful intro, 'Police.' Weak songs? Not really. A must? Only time can tell.
