On their fourth album, Club Diana show us again how Pavement would have sounded if they were lo-fi. After their other five-letter, single-word albums (Sauna, Basin, and Costa), they have become a strong name at the top of the Dutch lo-fi major league. But when they have to play the top teams from the USA major leagues, they are defeated. But hey, we're talking about Will Oldham, Smog, Dump, and Guided By Voices then. One step down and you find Club Diana, and this one is called Match, where you can hear the ever-recognisable voice of Marcel Brand. Starting with a friendly xylophone on the introverted Wrong Allright, then with strings on Pillkeeper, to the supercatchy Flies In The Open. And the same can be said about Good In It. You can imagine the band playing in the garage and experimenting with different versions of the same song, but then ultimately deciding that one of the first versions is the best. But doing the same thing, album after album, does lead to saturation. Club Diana showed us a great potential, and now it's time to move up. The distortion intermezzo on Troubleshooting, or the singing-child intro on Samoa: that's interesting. More of that variation and the fifth Club Diana album would certainly lead to promotion. And make sure it's a ten-word title then.
