One of last year's nice surprises from Holland was Damer’s Blue, which featured on Hometaping Is Illegal (And It’s Killing Music), a LivingRoom Records compilation album. In all its simplicity, Blue was a classic lofi pop song, with both a cheerful tune and somewhat downbeat lyrics: "I wanna cheer and giggle but I feel so blue." After their self-released Here With Us, this untitled mini-album is Damer’s official debut. Blue - the song that resulted in them being referred to as the Dutch Belle & Sebastian - also features here and gets a nice remix treatment in a fashionable electrobeat style as Kings Of Convenience did on Versus. But that superb song concludes a mini-album that’s a bit disappointing. Songs such as Telegraph and Train have charming lyrics about trivial stuff and contain some nice melodies, but, all in all, the material is a bit plain. Where Blue was a mature pop composition that indeed could be compared with Belle & Sebastian’s material on their debut Tigermilk, these new songs don’t stand out. It’s fine bubblegum pop again, but the flavour has already gone.
