Dave Olson. It’s such a typical name for a singer and songwriter. There are many singer-songwriters like him. They all have names like Dave Olson, play acoustic guitar and sing a country song about some unkind woman they’ve lost. Some of them sing about their lonesome hometowns and the hard life on the road, but most of them end up on alcohol and pills.
Dave Olson, like many troubadours, writes and sings his own songs. There is no song on #80 that he didn’t write. #80 starts off with The Working Life, which is another typical song title for an average album like this. Luckily, The Working Life is a song with a lot of twang in it, but it’s a little too slow. The other ten songs on #80 are even more slowed down. I don't know why.
Dave Olson’s debut release on Stumble and Fall records isn’t that awful. It’s just a mediocre release that doesn’t add anything new to the genre of folk-rock or any other music. I can’t think of a reason to run for the nearest record shop and buy this record, well, unless you own everything from Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Neil Young, Richard Buckner, Hank Williams, Uncle Tupelo and some others, of course. Another problem with Dave Olson’s music is that Dave’s vocals abilities are way to limited. It’s obvious that he is having problems with the quiet singing in a couple of songs. I don’t know what it sounds like when he rocks out, because he doesn’t do any dangerous things here.
