The Heideroosjes were always one of the Netherlands' most annoying bands. And that is quite an achievement
in the country that gave the world Pop Abraham & the Smurfs. It was the combination of mediocre punkpop
with annoyingly political correct lyrics that did the trick. Singer Marco Roelofs somehow always found ways
to kick in more open doors and jump more bandwagons in one 2 minute song than Sting on an entire album.
So 'NIMBY (Not In My Backyard)', the furious hardcore kick off of their new album 'Fast Forward' comes as a
big surprise. Technically above standard, nice and fat production by Oscar Holleman, even Roelofs' lyrics,
it all has power. Second track 'Nothing's Wrong' is musically even a bigger surprise, with a sort of punk
version of a Tool break and some disco style background vocals. 'Ik Wil Niks!' (I Want Nothing!) is nice
powerpunk, but then disaster strikes...
'We're All Fucked Up' is the 'Battlefield Earth' of punkrock. First thing to know is that Roelofs has a bit
of a Dutch accent, normally no big problem. 'We're All Fucked Up' however is an attempt at a Pogues /
Dropkick Murphys style folk-punk song and Roelofs considered it necessary to add authenticity by trying to
do an Irish accent, with a Meryl Streep defying mutant dialect as the result. Add to that that the song is
of a level Shane McGowan still could write after 24 hours without alcohol and lyrics including such great
lines as "Why not put a smile on a share a pint of beer / Everyone is welcome to have fun and give a cheer"
and you have a recipe for disaster
After that 'Fast Forward' only reaches the level of the first three songs in 'Freak Of Society' where
Roelofs backed by a staccato industrial guitar riff suddenly realizes the troubles of Dutch society are at
the level of "too many TV channels with too many soccer leagues". It is not enough to save the album since
the remaining songs consist of your standard Epitaph punkrock with sometimes cringe inducing lyrics. Like
when Roelofs feels the need to defend his brand new tattoo, because "today still people say tattoos are for
scum". We shouldn't do that: "It's my body, it's my life, it's part of me / Tattoo as expression, which
means I'm free". We should be proud of Marco he feels free to follow the herd and have exactly the same
tribal tattoo 80% of the world has. And when even Roelofs gets sick of his own PC-ness and decides to go
for some good old populism, what subject does he choose? Life without parole for child rapists! I foresee a
great political career for our Marco in the christian-democratic party as the 'wild and crazy guy'. I'll
fast forward my copy of their album to their HQ to bring this talent to their attention.
