There exists a very fine line between chill-out music and new age, easy-listening coffeeshop muzak. Alas, 'Folky: Acoustic Music in Digital Times' succeeds only in the latter category. Sure, conceptually speaking, taking acoustic music or any live performance for that matter and feeding it into a computer could yield interesting results. Unfortunately, the only interesting thing about this album is its sheer ability to bore. 'Folky' starts promisingly enough with G-litter's 'Easy Comes, Easy Goes", a noodly, Phish-esque ramble through psychedelia. Les Gammas even makes an appearance with a quaint, relaxed number replete with floaty vocals, acoustic guitar, and pleasantly wobbly keyboard work, and chill-out darlings Zero 7 contribute a densely layered, soothing downtempo venture. And that's about as good as it gets. The rest of the songs bleed into one another, taking the sound of an acoustic guitar and running with it, circling dangerously around Yanni- or John Tesh-inspired musical ideas. Often, the only marked differences between songs is a change in language. Whispy singing, acoustic strumming, and sounds of the ocean round out nearly every track, smothering any opportunity for a shift in mood or feeling. Not so much chill-out as downright soporific, 'Folky' will make for a pleasant slumber or perhaps provide the soundtrack to an inoffensive, placid dining experience. Let it date for a couple of years, and don't be surprised to find it playing in an elevator near you.
