While very much in its infancy, and less than a year after its first release, the 7" '10 For Life', Bastard Jazz Recordings is dazzling us again with a second installment, this time the 5 tracker EP Out of the Shadows.
Bastard Jazz is an independent up and coming label based in Brooklyn, NY, and is rapidly becoming one of downtempo's best kept secrets. Formed in the summer of 2001 by two good friends and like-minded individuals, Aaron Schultz and J.J. Marley, who soon after meeting realized their shared tastes for much of everything in life including music. Unsatisfied with the industry and adopting an uncompromising do it yourself approach, they were determined on setting up the business with the aim of putting out modern interpretations of jazz made by North American artists exclusively on vinyl.
One interesting aspect of this promising new label is the amazing diversity of its roster. Consisting of DJ's and Producers from very different ethinicities and backgrounds and from every corner of the globe, their roots are unavoidable and evident in much of their work. Bastard Jazz reflects the face of America's music underground, and is a cultural excursion to be rejoiced indeed; Saru (aka Spooky Monkey) is from L.A., Hao is from Hue, Vietnam, Chyl from Paris, France, Jugoe and the Mujaji brothers, Seth and Thoth (Shmack) are from the Netherlands, Marley was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and Aaron Schultz (DRM) is half Saudi and half Moroccan.
Maintaining the same inspired journey as its predecessor, their new wax features the labor of some of these talented young cats and is quickly establishing a following that is spreading like fire from the U.S. to Brazil and as far reaching as Japan. The fun begins with the beautifully dark, minimalist soundscapes of 'Dream Of A Place' by Spooky Monkey (Saru), and is followed by Shmack's (Mujaji) clever rendition of the same, this time with a tighter production, heavier drum breaks and the wicked touch of ethereal female vocals. On the flip, you'll get 2 versions of the cheeky 'Peepers' by Shmack, and Spooky Monkey gives us his own take of this playful song by tweaking it around and adding a in your face, spacey, bass-laden groove. But it's 'Easter Island' (Master Mosquito), a pleasantly delicate, gorgeously uplifting and lovely dubbed out melody with a funky guitar and deep hip-hop beats that had me hovering over the edge. This sweet tune is rich in musicality and happy understatement seeming to combine the essential elements of a wonderfully put together and seductive track. This one has "winner" written all over it. A bright future lies ahead for Bastard Jazz, and as they continue to release quality accessible music for an international audience, they are successfully achieving their goals while in between making quite an impression, one album at a time. That alone proves that they have a very special touch, and just leaves us wondering what it's coming up next.
