Mixing jagged punk guitars with melodic pop and Black Francis screaming out obtuse lyrics over it, the Pixies paved the way for alternative rock. Without Black Francis would there have been 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'? No, certainly not. But the influence seems to have traveled much farther than Nirvana. With 'Pixies Fuckin' Die!', Lifelike Records tried to assemble a mixture of bands that give tribute to this seminal band from Boston. From the Hard Candy's relaxed 'Bone Machine', Bethany Curve's shoegazing 'Gouge Away' to Underwater's 'Where Is My Mind' filled with loops and layers, all the bands try to add their own ingredient to the Pixies classics, which is definitely a plus. They didn't try to come up with a carbon copy of the original songs, which would have been an impossible task anyway. Most of the bands are relatively unknown, except the Moth Wranglers with their scary take on 'Nr 13 Baby' and Garageland who give a stripped down pop rendition of 'Allison'. All in all, not a bad record, but with most tribute records you feel like digging up the old records.
