Midway through 'Madre De Dios', Dozer's second full length album, it's hard to focus on anything else besides the enormous pounding drums. The Swedish four-piece have improved much in this area. That is good news. Other good news is that the record does capture some outstanding riffs ('Freeloader'). The bad news is that Dozer still has many problems. For one, the lack of nuances in the layering and the sound of the guitars. Their biggest downfall though, is that Dozer will not step out of the shadow of their big mentors, Kyuss. Why not, you ask? Well, because the songwriting is poor ('Actanoid', 'Mono Impact') and the vocal melodies are not as strong as they could be. 'Madre De Dios' sounds like one big grunt of layered distorted downtuned guitars without a moment of peace or any changes of atmosphere at all. Some songs sound like endless jams ('Earth Yeti') and most sound like the one that came before it. Dozer's second album ultimately sounds unoriginal and doesn't add anything to the music we've heard throughout the years in the stoner universe. That might not be a negative point for some, but lack of good songwriting and lack of arranging certainly is one to me. Some bands evolve and make interesting and even surprising records (Masters of Reality, Dead Meadow) and some bands keep recording the same music over and over again. Sadly enough Dozer belongs to the latter group. Status: poor.
