Double packs seem to be the flavour these days and the latest Virus release jumps on the bandwagon to bring you four tracks spread over two plates. The first plate (Socom/Crash) is produced by the faithful twosome Ed Rush & Optical who took the easy way out, apparently. Both tracks seem nothing but leftovers from the 'Wormhole' LP. Standard stuff, and far away from the quality of previous Virus releases like 'Lifespan/Crisis' or 'Gasmask/Bacteria'. On the second plate (Kridian/Mercury Switch), we see Optical joined by old school master Trace. This gives way to something more experimental, as influences from techno are used to spice up the proceedings. Kridian features some Basic Channel-like sounds that don't quite manage to lift the track from direness. Only 'Mercury Switch' saves this release from complete boredom. Cool breakbeat, dark oppressive bassline and a very Detroit-esque synth sequence make for a very pleasing listening experience, although not enough to make the buy worthwhile. A shame.
