After singer E’s personal misery as we all might have heard on the last album 'Electro-Shock Blues' the future of the band was uncertain. Some Eels gigs lasted no more than 5 minutes and E was devastated because of the death and misery around him. The new bass-player Tommy left the band in that period but together with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Grant Lee Buffalo-singer Grant Lee Phillips. Eels and drummer/percussionist Butch recorded the new album Daisies Of The Galaxy. Of course the Eels-sound is recognizable because of the use of samples, organs and little choires in the songs. But still every album has another character.
'Daisies Of The Galaxy' distinguishes itself especially because of the joyful sound and lyrics. E sings about the fact that he loves birds and in the first (hidden track) single 'Mr. E’s Beautiful Blues' the refrain consists of the sentence “Goddamn right it’s a beautiful day”. The album starts with some trumpets and trombones playing an unforced tune. The sound of the organ is more prominent than before ('The Sound Of Fear', 'Tiger In My Tank') and the mysterious starting 'Flyswatter' is maybe the best song the band has ever written. 'Daisies Of The Galaxy' will keep us warm until it’s summertime again!
