Minor Threat fans: Do not be fooled. Though Embrace features Ian MacKaye on vocals, this music has absolutely nothing to do with one of the most influential old-school bands that ever walked the face of the earth. This sounds more like a bunch of hippies on Valium and who just listened to a Cure record and decided to enter a studio to . . . to . . . to what, actually?
To annoy the hell out of people with a bunch of whining tunes. Where some bands succeed in combining the best of both worlds (At The Drive-In, Face Tomorrow, Waterdown), Embrace has found a way to take the worst of both guitar rock and indie rock (I don't want to use the term hardcore). The main problem with this musical mishap: Don't try to sing if you can't! Would it make anybody happy if someone like Lou Koller tried? Don't think so. If you're good at screaming, just stick to that. Another thing: Don't try to cover up the poor vocals by using dissonant melody lines for the sake of sounding lo-fi.
Unfortunately, these are the two main ingredients of the 16 nauseating tracks on this CD. They were recorded in '85 and '86. If nobody had ever hatched the stupid plan of remastering these recordings, all would have been forgiven and forgotten. But no, this load of crap had to be put out on an album. Despite the existing alternative of seventeen years' worth of legendary musical history.
