Big-ass commercially viable American rock. Make no mistake about it - coming men Errortype 11 are definite contenders to the crown held by bands like Creed, Lit, and the Foos when it comes to this genre, reviled by many for its continuous regurgitation of values conceived back in the golden age of alternative rock, the early nineties. The second album proper by this Long Island foursome, however, stands out in my book for its slight edginess and excellent production by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Screaming Trees). He managed to get a full, satisfying, yet balanced sound out of a repertoire that could very well have turned stale and sour if both band and producer weren't determined to just plain rock as hard as they could. The songs come off rough 'n' ready, even if for all nine of them they stole every goddamned riff from the Pumpkins' 'Siamese Dream' to STP's 'Purple' and lots of other familiar stuff from way back when. I have mixed feelings about this because on one hand it brings back those warm memories from my youth. But then again I must be firm and say that if they came up with something less blatant we would definitely be talking about one of the best new bands of the moment. Now they're just an exquisitely flavoured piece of gum. Still, I know plenty of folks who'll find it a great record from a solid new band. 'Amplified To Rock' packages the goods we know and love in a harder shell, which is nice. It's inspired in more ways than just the obvious, and if you ask me, I'd rather see them getting theirs than that pussy Scott Stapp.
