New York based collective Etro Anime toured through Europe as support act for Kosheen at the beginning of this year. Not surprisingly they got some good reviews. Compared to the somewhat uniform drum'n'bass Kosheen offers, Etro Anime sound more eclectic and adventurous. Furthermore, their live shows seem to be a colourful experience. Just like their debut See The Sound that has been released on the Dutch Entry 1 label. A diverse album that is sometimes reminiscent of Ohm Square or London Electricity if you like, but some points also sounds like Moloko going easy.
But mostly Etro Anime's sound is quite unique, referring as easily to hiphop and drum'n'bass as to downtempo, jazz and even a tiny bit of new wave. Built around the soulful vocals of Havana-born singer Lissette Alea, the five-piece smoothly constructs groovy bass-line driven songs. Dave Fisher (trumpet, saxophone, sampler) and Ted Birkey (keyboards) certainly know how to write good songs. Especially the drum'n'bass tracks are tasteful, with True Life, Forgotten Love and Andonis as highlights. But when the tempo goes down, Etro Anime get more and more predictable. Resulting in trip hop songs that are sometimes beautiful, like for instance Portait, but are mostly not special enough to get your attention completely. Nevertheless See The Sound is a very enjoyable album by a band that certainly has potential. Meanwhile their atmospheric drum'n'bass track Endless is a candidate for the summer anthem of 2002 competition.
