Re-issue on cd by Constellation Records from one of their first (vinyl only) releases. Exhaust, with Godspeed-drummer Aidan on drums and samples, is an experimental and dark hiphop/ trip hop/ drum'n'bass ensemble with noise/punk influences and tapeloops. No real songs here, merely soundscapes with beats. The album begins very dark and haunting with 'A history of guerrilla warfare', a live trip hop beat played over vocal samples and a soundscape so chillingly cold you immediately grab your Arctantic survivalgear. Following this incredible track, you get 'Metro mile-end' which again features funky live hip hop drums, and some beautiful clarinet. There's a certain kind of improv-music feel with Exhaust, which also comes to mind when listening to Aidan's very loose drumming (to put it mildy). Good stuff. The minimalist approach works well on these tracks - most of the time you only hear drums (live or sampled), sparse bass- or guitarfills, tapeloops, and some soundeffects. They let the space between the sounds do its mesmerizing work. But unfortunately not every track is worth mentioning. 'Homemade maggot beer' is a sorry attempt to make fun of grindcore, and surves no purpose whatsoever. The 1-Speed Bike (Aiden's alter ego) remix of 'This is our (borrowed) equipment' is plain boring, and that's a pity because other remixes like the curiously titled 'We support Iran in their bid to win the 1998 worldcup' are convincing from start to finish. In the industrial noise/ jungle mixture 'A medley of late night buffet commercials' they lose themselves in a needless display of weird and harsh sounds. Totally unnecessary, and it diminishes my 'good' rating into an 'adequate but not entirely impressive' rating. Hope they take some more time for the next album, there's enough talent here.
