The word 'fusion' usually gives me the willies when used to describe the style of a particular artist or group. More often than not, 'fusion' refers to a kind of drab blend of styles the artist uses to conceal his lack of inspiration. On some rare occasions though, the merging of styles adds up to a sum that is truly greater than the parts. Fortunately, this is the case with Fauna Flash's second album release on the German Compost imprint. Mixing drum&bass with house, lounge, dub and adding extra toppings like hip-hop and fine live percussion, the Fauna Flashers end up with a fine concoction of rich, warm, ultra-organic tracks. The German duo, also known as the Rainer Truby trio minus Rainer Truby, pulls off a wide range of styles with extraordinary ease, while maintaining their organic sound throughout all ten tracks featured here. Although occasionally drifting off into the realms of mellowness, most of the tracks maintain a very high standard, due to the energetic percussion and swirling basslines, whether it be drum&bass, house or some undefinable fusion of both. Personal favorites are the opening track 'Mother Nature', drum&bass track 'Referee' and the truly outstanding 'Ten', if i have to name any. Take my word for it and check it out, there's bound to be something here you like... Now, where have I heard that phrase before?
