Five Horse Johnson is an American foursome which has its musical roots in the southern rock and blues tradition. And with this CD they have released one of the better southern/stonerrock albums of this year. After three CD's and building up an impressive live reputation (I've heard they kick ass live) they found time to record 'The No. 6 Dance.' The music displayed on this disc combines all the good things in the southern and stonerrockscene. It has the sharp edges and raw power of southernrock is known for, but the album also has a very warm and full sound, not in the last place because of the many additional musicians, which enrich the sound of FHJ with Hammond-organ, Melotron, piano and extra guitars. The sound of the band can be placed in the line of Raging Slab, Alabama Thunder Pussy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Black Crowes and ZZ Top (listen to 'Lollipop'). Put this CD in your CD player and you will automatically smell the old beer, chopped wood, diesel fumes and the perfume of cheap women. The only critique I can have is that the last track ('Odella') is a little bit too long and less exciting. The climax (around 11 minutes) comes a little bit too late for me. But now I am aiming for straws. Five Horse Johnson has delivered an album that almost makes me want to buy a pick-up truck and cowboy hat and drive around the country. But then the CD stops and I get brutally reminded that I live in Holland. Luckily autumn is mild this year...
