When the CD opens, you could be forgiven for thinking that Faith No More was back with a vengeance. But soon, you're driven to heavier and deeper forms of thrash and hardcore. Strangled vocals, heavy dinosaur riffs and mega drums kicking double rhythm bass bombs are all present in spades. But don't be mistaken, as great as this sounds, some hardcore fans are going to find this a little "pretty" for their tastes.
For an old fart like me, this is the perfect album for enjoying crunching headbanging music. You see, as much as I like it in small doses, I'm a melody hound. I also like diversity. That comes from my prog-rock background. This satisfies my minimum adult daily requirements for all of the above and it does it by shifting rhythmic and textural gears and fattening the sound with synth sounds. And it does it without sacrificing the power and the glory of power metal. Mix in grindcore, rap, death metal and prog metal and you have music that kicks your ass *and* your brain.
This is one massive "major label" debut (they've previously released an album on a regional label). The recording is dynamic, fat and richly textured, which is oftentimes difficult to achieve with the density of the sound of the band like this. My hat's off to the engineering team. But my hat's especially off to this band, which consists of kids barely to their 20s. They have savvy well beyond their years and are deserving of recognition.
Not being a real headbanger, I hesitate to recommend this album, simply because it's a little out of my ken. Some might find it derivative, but I can tell you that I've really enjoyed this album for what it is, and that's a power album that kicks ass. So, having made my quibble statement, you can go to their website and actually hear several full-length cuts (I wish that more bands did this). I actually loaned it to a friend of mine who is a Korn/311 kind of groove hound, and he loved it as well. Validated? Well, maybe. But you be the judge. Go to the website and decide for yourself. This band has the juice. Simple as that. Also, hats off to a well-designed, cool ass web site.
