There used to be a band called Lemming who released an EP (the 'Search' EP) back in 1998, and there used to be another band, a long long time ago, called Lemming, who, unfortunately for the other Lemming, did not want Lemming to be called Lemming, and so Lemming decided to put an F in front of their name and thus became Flemming. Everyone still with me? Enough for the whole name problems, it's the music that counts, and in this case it is good music, people! Just don't be fooled by the cover, as it might suggest some funky disco record with those letters (though there is nothing wrong with funky disco! And there is nothing wrong with the cover-art either!), as this is a record full of so many things there is not one word that sums it all up, I'm afraid! There are phat drum beats on 'The Water's Rising' as well as very strange noises, there are cute "ooh-aah" choruses on 'Starry Night', and loud guitars on 'Your Way'. And then, suddenly, after all this weirdness, comes along a track that can only be described as plain beautiful, 'This One'. The vocals are beautiful, as are the lyrics ("what can you say/when words slide away/and they're gone?") and the music. Is it obvious who their influences are? Well, 'Free To Choose' does begin like a Subcircus track, and 'The Box' suggests they've been listening to very old jazz records, but songs like 'Your Life is Dead' and 'Again' don't sound like anybody but Flemming, I guess. So the answer to that question is no. And will Flemming have a long and bright future ahead of them? I'd say yes.
