For some reason, I always get stuck with the worst records. The un-reviewable records seem to have my name written all over them. The new Tool or Air records never make their way into my mailbox, but German-sung disco, Norwegian house, and (again Norwegian) "lovesoul" do. Now, the Norwegian house and the German disco turned out to be quite bearable - but unfortunately I can't say the same about Frode Holm's newest record 'CPU', which is released by CPU under the artist name of Frodo. Does this become a difficult story? OK, I'll make it easy. In the 70s, Frode used to be the keyboardist with fusion band Vanessa (Who doesn¹t know them?). Wanna make it complicated again? OK, here it is (quoting the bio): "His solo career as a singer started with a band called 'Sgt. Salt' in the late seventies." Interesting that he started his solo career with A BAND! But from that point on, the bio tells us nothing about his solo career. It does tell us that Frode was pretty big with his band 'HolmCPU' (Did I say confusing names?) in Norway and some other parts of Scandinavia. A couple of years ago he moved to Santa Barbara, California, and now he's back with 'CPU'. The song titles say it all. The album starts with 'Dedicated to My Love for You', goes via 'Waiting for You', and ends up with 'Existing on the Edge'. Basically, this is a record about love, romance, and life. Indeed Frode (or Frodo) is an Earth, Wind and Fire wannabe. But I have to say his voice is not all Philip Bailey, and his lyrics are not quite Maurice White - and he ain't Barry White either: "She's looking fine. She's looking good! Tatatatatatata. She's looking at me, love eye. Watching for me, love eye. She's staring at me, love eye..." And now I'm gonna put some good music on again and write some hate-mail to our dear KindaMuzik editor for having me review some crap in the first degree: "Dear Editor, Do I actually have to listen to the whole record before I write a review? Thank you for sharing the new Frodo album with me - I actually had some fun writing the review, which can not be said about listening to it. Et cetera, et cetera." [The author is currently recovering from writing these lines. We have been informed by his medical advisors that he is swiftly on the road towards total recuperation. - Ed.]
